Looking For Info On Civil War Period Style Sets

Sort:
Rikhardr

I am a C.S. Naval War Between The States living history reenactor and also enjoy muchly the Royal game.  I'd like to add a chess set to my Confederate naval kit but not sure the proper style nor type for the 1861-1865 period.

Suggestions and ideas welcomed and would be of great assistance!

Thanks and I've already done a Google search.  Hoping some of the members might have some more information.  Most of the response in Google show the current C.W. figure chess sets.

(As a side bar note:  Being a student of Linclon's War for over 49 years, I understand that slavery was protected by U.S. law 80+ years before any Southern State left the union.  Slavery was not a Southern creation, it was a northern one.  All transportation of slaves into the U.S. was done under the U.S. flag and into northern ports.  Almost all current school books leave that part out of history and cast us Southerns as creating slavery in the U.S.)

The Jaques Staunton was around in the Civil War period:

http://www.britishchesssets.com/chess/BCS_Sets2.jpg and is referred to as the Anderssen or Cook variations: http://www.britishchesssets.com/chess/BCS_Ns2.jpg.

Now that you know what to look for I would poke around the different sellers and see which comes closest to the originals. Perhaps one of the club sets offered by HOS or another set that looks like the "Cook" variation: http://www.houseofstaunton.com/chess-pieces/wooden-chess-pieces.html or watch eBay and see if something turns up that comes close to looking like those variations. Hope this helps.

Thanks Sir!  That was just the information I was looking for!  :)

Also, liberals who control the U.S. public school system conveniently leave out (deliberately) that slavery still exists in Africa where it started to begin with. If all the ignorant people bringing up slavery really have a problem with it then why don't they actually go do something to stop it? In Africa where it never stopped & is still happening. Shhh, don't tell everyone, it's harder to manipulate & brainwash so many if their horizons are broadened.

By the way, a civil war era chess set would be cool.

I believe that our understanding of that time period is on the same page MrDamonSmith and thanks for the reply!

MrDamonSmith

You bet. Just keepin' it real as they say.

I suppose another way of saying "Civil war period" sets would be to say "Morphy era"...correct?

one idea is to look at the hundreds of pics of that period, say, the Steinitz/Anderssen match etc...of course the pics r small and grainy hehe

btw, happened to notice this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Jaques-Son-Set-of-Chessmen-card-Box-a-Chess-Set-Compendium-/351002373238?pt=UK_Toys_Games_Games&hash=item51b95f2c76

It is just an empty box but might go well with the set you choose. Good luck!

Studio Anne Carlton used to have a Tudor Kings and Queens set.

Why didn't the North enslave american indians ?....or did they (try) ?....What are your thoughts ?....Smile....thanks....Lola

Rikhardr

They did have indian slaves in early colonial periods but changed to purchasing blacks as the then cost per black during that time period was cheaper then that of the price of an indian.  Again, my point that slavery was not a Southern invention regardless of what the current Orwellian school/college texts of U.S. history of that time period may claim!

Slavery was a terrible activity practiced in both our colonial and northern pre-civil war periods by most sections of this country.

Jaques chess sets would have been most likely unaffordable to common soldiers. They were expensive and were marketed to people of means. I would look at some of the early American manufacturers instead. HORN was producing sets in this period and would have been a more likely choice.

PS: this is a chess forum. please direct your thoughts on confederacy/slavery at Fox News or some other forum where that sort of perspective is welcome.

Just responding to questions, very sorry Frank that it has offended you!

The part of the country I'm from is Wisconsin.  :)
