Ubisoft Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition

Does anybody else own this? My parents gave it to me for Christmas when I was 8. It is the best Christmas present I have ever gotten. :) There is literally no other program that can hold a candle to this. It has like 1,000 hours of interactive lessons by Josh Waitzkin and Larry Christiensen. Tactics, rated games, unrated games, and the blunder alert for analyzing games. If you are looking for good software, take my advice, GET THIS.

I disagree Chessmaster is very clumsy to use when data mining games for training most top level and club players use: Chess Base with Fritz, Chess Assistant or some variant of SCID, these program allow for better organization of games. Thou I agree that the lesson’s that are provided are quiet good for beginner players, Thou I prefer the lesson from the St Louis Chess Club website. The King engine used in the Chess Master is weak compared to Stockfish and Komodo and a bunch of other engines. I would only recomend chessmaster for fun or casual players. Tournament players should use either CB, CA or SCID. plus for CB and CA you can also buy video lessons.

Thanks, Chopin!

I own the 10th version, I like it ok...

Having used both, I can say that Chessmaster is better for beginners and intermediate players. It's much more user friendly and the lessons by Josh as well as the various exercises are incredibly instructive.

Fritz has a more professional style of play but that doesn't mean FMs, IMs and even GMs can't use Chessmaster. It is after all a very good program and will proabably beat most (if not all) humans.

I own Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition. I'm a fan. I first played CM in playstation, I think its CM2.Then I bought CM8000, CM9000, CM10e and then the latest Grandmaster Edition (CM11e).

What's cool to CM11e is that you can hold tournaments which is similar to real life. And even cooler, aside from Chopin's citations, CM11e also let's you record your opening repertoire.

I always play as White against CM top dog TheKing, and never won. Although I got one game where I have positional advantage (I think) and then blew it with a simple blunder.

The lessons in CM11e are fine but limited.

Right now, I also own Deep Fritz 14 as my training sparring and ChessBase 13 as my database. I tried and used some other programs but these three are the ones that suited me and my purpose.

I got CM Grandmaster Edition for my 10 birthday I think. It's brilliant but...I do like the look of Fritz. Never tried Fritz though so I'll reserve judgement till then :P

I agree with this :D

If you already have Chessmaster, that's good. The biggest problem with CM is that Ubisoft has given up on it. It's no longer sold, and used prices are getting a bit pricey. The CM game server has been shut down. The only support for it is one guy on the Ubisoft/CM forum, and I don't even know if he's getting paid or if he's doing it for other reasons. As time goes on, installation of CM into the newer operating systems becomes more of an unknown.

I have CM 10th Edition; I'm assuming CMGE is very similar to it.

If you only want to play against the CM engine, great. But if you like to install other engines, the big limitation is that CM only allows import of Winboard engines.

The tutorials are very nice, though. I agree that CM has value to beginners and novices, if you can live with the other negatives I mentioned.

How does everyone feel about Fritz 15? I am considering purchasing it and as a player who is returning after a long absence I'm interested in whether it will be useful in improving my game (I'm probably only a D class player at this point). Also, is Chessbase something that a novice can benefit from? I know the good players use it but I am unfamiliar with its features. How does Fritz integrate with Chessbase?

Thanks for any help you can provide.Wink

This post has the potential for hijacking the thread. Why not create a new thread for your question?

P.S. Why are you using a font with a gray color? It's very hard to read.

Sorry, I'm new here. I'll take your advice and try to post a new thread. Thanks.

I love Chessmaster! I play when I need practice! It's great for beginners and for those who are intermediate, like me! But for those whose level soars above.... it's obsolete!

The very first chess program I was ever exposed to was CM4000. The first time I ran it myself, the screen suddenly changed to this picture.  ( I was like 6 years old). I was so scared that I fell over in my chair, ran out of the room screaming, and had nightmares for 3 weeks. :D

lol...he's scary to me now!!! :-)

Just more stream lined interface, better and faster search: players, openings themes tactics and endgames. results. stronger engines, also online community play chess is better then chessmasters.

I used to play against Chessmaster 2000, many years ago. I don't think you could adjust the strength in those days so you played it on full strength, which I'd guess was about 1400 or so.

I used to like playing against that, there's something satisfying about playing against a weak engine at full strength rather than a super-GM engine dumbed down

Just been googling and found a site called myabandonware that allows you to run CM2000, CM3000 etc directly from your browser. No need to download or install. Brings back memories. CM2000 predates the mouse of course so you're using control keys and cursor keys
