Fischer was a great player... trouncing three very strong GM's to get down 0-2 against Spassky and still work him over good to become World Champion. That's all he want to do... he didn't want to give the game anymore attention because he thought it was a waste of time. When you're on top of the hill and still playing somebody's going to eventually knock you off. So retiring a Champion avoids the embarrassing losses. Kasparov didn't worry about that and that's why he's the greatest. His body of work is overwhelming compared to almost everyone except Lasker.

He thought it was a waste of time? Fine. What did he do with his time that was so productive after that?

I think Bobby Fischer. I read the book "Russians against Fischer" and the reason Fischer would not play Karpov was that he had to do it all over again. Playing Karpov would mean that he had to fight most of the Sovjet players also cause they would help Karpov. So, not a second time.

It's impossible to declare who's the best, but you can say who is the best in some aspects:

Magnus Carlsen is the best player ever in playing endgames.

Garry Kasparov is probably the strongest ever, but not the best in the endgames (he used to win before).

Anatoly Karpov is probably the player with the deepest positional comprehension of the game.

Mikhail Tal is the most aggressive (and spectacular) player ever.

Tigran Petrosian is the hardest to beat (he almost never lost)

Bobby Fischer is like Kasparov, more or less.

Alexander Alekhine was a monster (he was very similar to Carlsen nowadays) who destroyed more or less always his strong opponent, winning some strong tournaments with the advantage of 5/6 points on the second ones (Efim Bogoljubov,Aaron Nimzowitsch,so great players)

Capablanca...well,I know he was great, but I don't know in what he was best.

Wilhelm Steinitz is the first champion to really understand the positional play.

Adolf Anderssen is the great champion of the XIX century, with Paulsen and Steinitz obviously.

Finally,according to me:Carl Schlechter.

Look at his notable games and you will find out why!

ROFLMAO - Fischer was NOTHING compared to Kasparov.  Garry would have smacked that fool silly had they ever faced in a match!

Best ever endgame play is arguable.  Don't leave Capablanca out of that equation.

Also, some players that never were World Champion are amongst the strongest ever:

Korchnoi - Stein - Nezhmetdinov - Just to name a few.

That said, if someone pointed a gun to my head and asked me who the greatest ever was, I'd have to say Kasparov.
