Chess.com Feedback: Sort games list

Sort:
erik

We occassionally get requests to be able to sort the game list (the CURRENT GAMES) on your http://www.chess.com/echess/myhome.html page. But as we talked about it, what would you want to sort by? What are the use-cases where this is necessary? You want to sort alphabetically (why?)? Sort by game name? Sort by # of moves?

Please let me know the use-case that drives this suggestion.

Thanks!

The only useful idea in my opinion would be to sort in order of time left to move.

which is how it currently sorts...

Erik, a while back i made a suggestion that sort of comes under this heading.

I dont have many games on the go at the moment, but back then i had about 100.

I wanted a way to flag particular games, along with ,maybe a explanation why it was flagged (sort of like our 'status' tab), the reason? well, if i have no moves to make, i like to refer to some ongoing games and spend time analysing what might happen, what i might do etc if my opponent does this or that. I want a way to flag certain games, 'losing badly, needs attention!' or 'im winning this one easy, dont waste time on this one' etc etc. This way if i have a lot of games on the go, i can select a game to analyse quickly and easily, without having to wade through all my games and reassess each one.

Hope this makes sense!

just to add... if we could tag our own games, all we would need was a way to bring all the tags to the top, the searches then would be endless, as each member would be in charge of his own tags/searches.

I think sorting by # of moves would be very helpful, especially if you have multiple games in the opening stages which are following similar lines.

Sorting alphabetically by game name would group all the tournament and match games together for easy reference.

I would also like to see the Completed Games sorted by type of win (Checkmate, Resignation, Timeout), and/or by my personal result (win, lose, draw).

That's already the default. The list is currently sorted first by Status: (My Move!, Waiting, Vacation); then by Time Left.

When I come back to the site after several hours absence, nearly all of my games have the same status (My Move!) and the same Time Left (2 Days) so they appear in approximately random order. Normally, I work through the games in the default order, making a move and then using Next Ready Game to go on to the next.

When all the games are in the Waiting state, and they again appear in a fairly random order, it would certainly be easier for me to find my game with a particular opponent if I could sort by opponent. (I recall games more by opponent than by game name.)

The other sort key I would make use of is sorting by whether the opponent is online or not. I'd really like to be able to list the games FIRST where my opponent is online.

I also like to group my games by opening (these are all my Spanish games, these are my Sicilian games, etc.), but imagine that would be a lot more difficult to actually implement.  It's a thought tho.

Perhaps one would want to sort the games by # of moves, to see which games will end soon (to see which games will end soon, which could be useful to see if his tournament games in a particular tournament are almost finished, which could be useful to see when he can start or join a new tournament, given he is not a Diamond member and can't play in unlimited tournaments), or to find a game where he only roughly knows the position but not the opponent's name (for example when you're in the endgame with a high # of moves, or still in the opening with a low # of moves).

One other way to conveniently sort games could be by tournament/match. Then you can see per tournament how many games you have left, and per match how you're doing for your team.

But both are not my use-cases :) They could just be use-cases :P

I would love this option as well.  It would be VERY useful.

I don't have a specific requirement in this area, but I'm a proponent of giving users as much control as possible.  To that end, the ability to display/hide, rarrange the horizontal order of and sort by any and all available attributes would be outstanding and would allow everyone's requirements to be met.

I would like to be able to organise games by tournament/opponent/team etc. Maybe some way to stick games into separate folders and then only display the games in a particular folder?

strani

I like the game tagging idea. I would also like maybe a "Friends/Tournament/Random" sort, so I can play my casual games with friends when I want, or during study time tourny games organize them and play through them.

I also like the sort by # of moves that's been suggested.

How about a sort by # of games the two players have played against each other?

Billium248

Sort by start date could be helpful too.  Since I am a Chess Turtle, my games can take a loooong time.  It would be helpful to see who I've kept waiting the longest, so that I can prioritize that game over the newer ones.

For current games...

• Opponent's rating
• Friend/non-friend status
• Playing white/playing black
• Potential rating adjustment (!!)

For archived games...

• Result (win/loss/draw)
• Played white/played black
• Opponent's rating when game was played
• My rating when game was played
• Rating change after game result

Just a wish list. And while you're at it, I'd like to have a Canon 14mm f/2.8L II lens for Christmas. Can you throw that in? You CAN?! Wow, thanks! LOL

I could see the point of sorting current games by opponent rating. It would act as a rough guide to how tough the games are likely to prove.

Even a simple one-character flag/tag would be a start - as email clients tend to have. (They generally let you flag an entry as junk, high priority, etc.). Without sorting, flagged games would still have more visibility; sorting would be the icing on the cake.

i think potential rating adjustement if i lose, i would like to know which games to spend more time on.

Another way of achieving this would be to have a navigation button Next Online Opponent (analagous to Next Ready Game), that would cycle through the list of games in which my opponent is online (but in which it may not be MY turn to move). ARTREF:NEXT ONLINE OPPONENT
