Member Search - How to Improve It?

Sort:
roundtuit

We have (CoT) OTB added to the account names of members of our Group, this allowes me to put (CoT) OTB in the "Member" cell, then sort from there by putting a Max and Min rating in the appropriate cells.

There seem to be three problems with this technique.

1. When I do a member search for "COT (OTB)", the search throws away the brackets and matches names such as:

  • collegecotbuc
  • scootbarber
  • SCOTBALL

which coincidentally contain the sequences "COT" and "OTB".

2. This only applies to a single group. Anyone who manages several groups and wants a member list in rated order of each of those groups can't get it using this method.

3. The member list is not sorted into rating order - nor is the rating information directly available.

roundtuit

You have the brackets in the wrong place, it should be (COT) OTB when we first started using this, you could change the search criterior (once you had your basic list) and search by Last Time on Line, or Ratings, but chess.com changed that, as for members of multiple groups, I dont see how you could supply a criterior for that kind of sort.

That's my point. It used to work - it doesn't now. On your profile, your name is displayed as Robert (Bob) Moore (CoT OTB). Presumably you have added the "(CoT OTB)" explicitly?

Re: Multiple groups - I was meaning searching within ONE GROUP AT A TIME. A policy of adding a group name in brackets could become pretty unwieldy for those members in 70+ groups.

roundtuit

And it still works, but not quite as easy as it used to.(CoT OTB) has been added explicitly for the sort  (you may get an odd chess.com member with that combination) from there you do need to post the max and min rating range you need. The sort will work if you use View Player, from the Play Chess Menu (not the Search Members in the Members Menu) from there, you can transfer to a spread sheet, and do any sort you wish, or as I say, put in the Min and Max rating for a list of those members.

You're right. FIND PLAYER search on the Players page does work for CoT. I was using Member Search from the main page.

roundtuit

It is not as good as it used to be, but it does give you some information.

chess_kebabs

It's a catch 22. You want a full list because not all members sign up for team matches in the first place, so they won't all sign up for the dummy team match. But it's definitely worth doing to have some sort of list, even if an incomprehensive one. Going to do it in my group until staff come up with a better solution. Thanks for the tip Artfizz.

I have this last comment twice ;)

It would be nice if I could list the members in their rating order. This would help me in arranging better team matches as I would know how many players are there in different rating ranges.

artfizz wrote: Here's a method that will work:

1. Create a dummy Team Match against a dummy opponent.

2. (Making sure that AutoStart is set to 'NO')

3. Get all members of the group to sign up for it.

4. All members of the group will now be listed in rating order.

This is how I find players in my Group, all Members have (CoT OTB) added to their name for Circle of Trust OTB

Go to your Online Chess page, and find this Menu

At this Menu I type (CoT OTB) in the Find Player box , and click on search. I used to be able to set the box that now says Countries to a sort by Last on Line, or by Rating, but this option was changed a while back, and is no longer possible, the only way now is to set a Min and Max rating to get certain members, or transfer the list to a spreadsheet, and sort there

wow!

that is great!

So you can key in your group name and a rating range, and voila!

That is just what I'm after...

Will test it out.. brb

roundtuit

only if your members have that as part of their name in their Account Profile

I don't understand.

roundtuit

all my members have (CoT OTB) added to their name in their Account Profile, and that is what the search uses to find them.

chess_kebabs

Thanks rounttuit, but that sounds like too much work.. I have over 500 members in my group and it's growing.. don't want to ask them all to add the group name on their profile, especially when many belong to other groups.

I much prefer Artfizz's Dummy Group team match challenge.  :)

egdodnoj

New members don't seem to show up in the search at all, even if you know their exact user name.  I've been trying to add my brother, and he doesn't really know how the site works.  So I thought I would add him and challenge him to a game, but I type in his user-name and he doesn't show up in the search.  I think that's weird, so I try to search some random people from the new member's collomb and they don't show up either.  Anyone know how long long you have to be a member before you'll show up in the member search?  Kind of frustrating.

How can the members of a team be listed with their ratings across their names and could be sorted by name and by rating?

Manage Members -> Sort by Highest Rated.

Or, some group admins who prefer to see a member list sorted by rating on a single page, achieve this by challenging the Dummy group to a Dummy Team Match, and getting their group members to sign up for it.

ChessisGood

Well, the main thing I'd like to see would be the ability to search for members through the main chess.com search toolbar at the top-right of the screen. Sure, it'll show a member on the right, but there is no simple way of getting to there homepage. Making that a link would be much preferred.

As far as searching, I mainly go by username. However, I will sometimes look for exact names or use the map to see those in my area.

ChocolateIsCool2022

there is no list of every account with an OTB rating on it! That would be helpful, as I have a club for OTB and FOA rated players only.
