me neither, i know how u feel
spammers

I will because sooner or later if no one adresses it the staff will be unaware and they will multiply like rats!

Interesting fact on spam;
Spam, a product and trademark of Hormel Foods Corp. Rather than broadening by common use to refer to all brands of canned smoked ham and pork instead of just the original brand, the term spam took on a completely different meaning: unsolicited commercial email or electronic postings, usually sent indiscriminately to vast numbers of recipients.

Spamming (on this site anyway) nowadays means 1 or 2 players incessantly messaging utter rubbish over and over and over and over and over again with no regard as to anyone else's feelings.
These people tend to only think of how much trouble they can cause and/ or how much annoyance they can be to others.

Spam is the abuse of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately.

who came up with this idea of spamming anyway? now it's been a big problem on computers everywhere, even here on chess.com

I agree. It's already happened really. For whatever reason though the staff seem to ignore every request to have a discussion about this issue. Although they have been deleting more topics recently that contain spam, it's certainly no deterrent in my opinion. I can't find any downsides with giving them one warning, and then a permanent ban.

If you guys see spam on the forums, please let us know, using the "Report Abuse" link at the bottom of the page. We can't see every post on the forums, we deal with what we do see, and deal with what is reported. If we don't see it, and its not reported... there's not much we can do.

So you've changed your policies then? You will ban spammers?

There has been no policy change. We do take into consideration how bad the spam is. For example, someone posting a meaningless thread in the forums is not likely to get you banned (at least not the first time). But someone posting an ad with a link to their website selling phones and shoes, won't be around long. This is the way it's been done for as long as I've been on staff.
Also, please note, that what we typically don't do is discuss what actions we take with other members. If I've told a member "if you do that again, your account will be closed" because of something you've reported, I'm not likely to tell you that I told that other person that.

Posting a meaningless thread in the forums does not get anyone banned the 1st or 100th time. I was going to give the most obvious example but I don't want to give anyone an excuse to lock this thread. Let me just refer to him as "chess.com's number 1 spammer", you all know who I mean.
Anyway, can I ask why posting spam with ads in it it is so much worse than spam without ads?

As for your first part, that's not true, we closed an account for that just earlier today. As for that person you mention, as I said, we don't discuss specific actions taken against members. We are aware of and dealing with the situation, though.
As for the second part, there are a number of reasons its worse, for one, the site gets paid for the legitimate ads that are on here, these forum spammers don't pay anything. Additionally, maybe this isn't true for you, but personally, I'm a lot less annoyed by someone spouting off nonsense than I am by someone trying to push their black market iPhone on me. Especially since, I may not know what the new person's post is about. Whereas this "other member" you mention, I can just see a post is from him (or her) and ignore it.

I concur. I'd much rather see a bunch of funny pictures than some knucklehead trying to sell shoes.

Your response to my 1st point has only left me confused I'm afraid. But to say why would be to refer to a specific member or members, and as you say you wouldn't of course be then willing to discuss this further..
Ok, I can understand about them not paying, that's something I didn't consider.
That isn't true for me actually. Both kinds annoy me just as much as they both make a mockery out of the honest members who actually make an effort to post something of worth. Just because I know who the topic is made by doesn't detract from that. It's still another thread added to the pile to ultimately push anything of substance to the side. If you were to start a survey asking chess.com members if people who post spam of any kind should be banned after probably a warning or 2, I'm quite sure a lot of members would agree with me here. As I said the positives seem to outweigh the negatives in my favour here, in my humble opinion. Well in fact I can't really think of any negatives..
I can not stand them. You guys?
