I am looking to purchase a hand held chess computer that I can take with me on trips and etc. and I was wondering what is good to purchase and why?

If you have a PDA you might be able to dl and use openchess (free). Commerical programs like HIARCS are great. Your phone may be a candidate as well--do a search.

For Palm devices:

HIARCS
Chess Genius

For WinMobile devices:

PocketGrandmaster (highly recommended!)
PocketShredder
Pocket CT ART 3.0

I am looking for a hand held electronic chess for my 10 y/o.
He is a beginner but a bright kid. I have to concentrate against him or he wil beat me!
I have read costumer reviews on numerous games. Screen visablity seems a common complaint.
I like the idea of the hand helds with a stylus so he does not have to worry about losing pieces so it can be portable for him.

Are PDA such as Palm software better choices?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rob

I agree with RobCor that screen visibility and the design of the pieces should be looked at closely before purchasing any hand held chess computer. Below is the type of design I consider unacceptable for any chess-playing device, just take a look a the pieces:

I'd say get an android tablet, there's plenty of free chess apps and a chess.com interface.

you have a lot of free chess apps for android devices. even chess.com has an android app,it's not so strong though.

In my experience Shredder plays the most human-like game.  Some other software seems like it plays full strength for a bunch of moves and then plays a ridiculous move to give you back the material you lost.  Not fun at all.  I would consider this in your choice of hardware.  I know Shredder works on apple and android hardware.

I had the same idea this week. Seeing the prices and elo-rating, I opted to buy a secondhanded nintendo DS-lite and chessmaster for it. You'll get a more usefull device, that is stronger than most of the handheld-chess computers and you have some money left in your pocket.
