The easiest way is to click on QUOTE as the method of launching the forum editor. Once you are actually editing a post, you can't use the QUOTE button (otherwise it will create a new post and throw away what you have just written).

It is a common problem. Here is a method that works.

Use a separate view for the original post and for the comment you are writing: either open separate TABS in your browser or open two separate browser windows.

If the post you are referring back to is on the same page as you are writing in (so that you do not have to use the forum navigation links

you will be OK. Otherwise, if you navigate to a different forum page, YOUR text will be discarded - just as you have experienced.

So are you saying there is no officially supported way to put multiple answers (each with its respective quoted text) in the same post? Nothing like BBcode tags or something similar?Surprised

If so, you can achieve it by using QUOTE to launch the editor. Then copy and paste the just-quoted text within the same posting (possibly several times), then snip bits from the newly pasted-in bits. PLUS you have to re-edit after submission to get rid of HTML gunk.

If, on the other hand, you were trying to quote from TWO DIFFERENT original posts, then it can't be done (except by explicit copy and paste, in which case you won't get the original text highlighted).

I tried your suggestion and, while it does seem to work, I find it hard to use.

I really hope this will be improved: though I understand it's a very minor issue, I think chess.com deserves something better.Smile

With nested quoting  (see http://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/dont-quote-me-on-that for instance), the problem gets even worse.

Out of curiosity, do you know if the software used here is a customization of some open source product or was created from scratch by the staff? If the latter, kudos for the great work but... why reinvent the wheel?

I'm sorry I haven't a clue - but my money would be on the former.
