Standard Ratings Boost

hello community!

today we will be "boosting" the standard ratings for all active standard players in live chess.

for multiple reasons, many of which we've narrowed down and some of which we can't even explain, the standard ratings in live chess are WAY too low.

on average, people's ratings are hundreds of points lower than their actual "over the board" strength. even our titled players are often unable to break over 2000 given that the pool of players (because everyone starts at 1200) is simply so low.

a scientific evaluation by our staff of our system has suggested to us that the best, most efficient way to fix this is "problem" to simply "inflate" (don't worry, we aren't printing money here Tongue Out) all ratings by an amount that we deem most reasonable for each rating class:

+150 for <1600
+200 for 1600-1700
+300 for 1700-1800
+400 for 1800+
and
+500 for titled players

We are fully aware that some players currently rated lower than 1600 will claim he/she is worth more than a 150 point boost Wink -- and in some cases, they may be right!

Likewise, we are also aware that boosting some titled players by 500 may be putting them at a rating 200-300 points higher than they should be.

But on average, this is what we came up with. And for those of you who feel you aren't getting enough and that some higher rated players are getting too much, well then you will have fun taking their "over-rated" points away from them as you climb the ladder, won't you Wink!

enjoy and have fun!

This is an automatic boost? Or are you simply boosting the rating back into provisional so we flare harder? Meaning, we play, we get more points, and more accurate ratings?

Will similar boosts happen for the other time controls or is only Standard Time considered to be "off?"

Article sounds like just standard will be changed. Could be something wrong in their algorithm.

The problem may recur (no guess as to how long it will take) while the 1200 anchor remains. Why not use provisional ratings rather than an anchor?

I feel like that would have been a better idea, but I like the boost. Everyone is just going to be mad bragging "HEH, I'M 1600 IN STANDARD" when they were 1300 mer minutes ago.

steve_bute

I didn't receive the boost. Not that I want it, I would be embarrassed to see myself at 2048.

What a let-down. I dreamed that I had trounced a player several hundred points above me with my first queensac/ smothered mate, and woke up to find 150 extra rating points...

And now it all seems so mundane.  Cry

A "boost"...lol.

Why only live standard? Blitz were even lower.

psinbad

That was a shock when I tried to play my first game and even aborted it because I was playing someone 200 points higher than my old rating. Then I checked some of their previous games and saw they had been rerated too. I'm still not sure why this was done.

Agreed. My standard rating is now similar to OTB, which is nice. But this leaves my blitz rating 400 points lower. Granted, I am horrible at blitz, but I believe it's at least underrated by 200 points (probably more).

@Webmaster:

Would have been an informative and useful announcement several hours ago.  Or was leaving your membership confused and angry a way to make sure the change got noticed?  Doesn't anyone coordinate these things?  Enough of this kind of nonsense and folks start reevaluating their membership here.

steve_bute

I'm going to go crush some previously-1400's.

Interesting...well, my standard and online ratings finally straddle my "real" rating a lot more equally, I guess that's good.  My blitz rating is still in the tank ;)...starting at 1200, and with a 5/3 win ratio, I have climbed all the way to...1156?

Admittedly, I have mostly used blitz/bullet to experiment with f4 variants I was pondering and trying "hippo" style openings I have never played at all.

Odd, I haven't been paired with a single player yet in standard-live who has received the boost.

Because they are useless?

It's the wrong goal, implemented badly, and with no prior communication. And if you don't use the forum you wont be told at all.

Ratings aren't designed to be compared across time controls or player pools. Pointless pursuit.

Not only that, but the live standard ratings were probably the most accurate of the lot. Blitz were even lower, and online are 'inflated' to a greater extent.

A cluster of incompetence.

Why not do something useful like make people able to claim a repetition draw even if their opponent makes conditional moves in online chess? It's been broken for years.

Or actually update game explorer, allow underpromotions in 'vs computer' etc.

Was happy to pay in the past, but they haven't actually fixed anything or implemented anything new in years.

My first boost victim now ... so far not quite the "like taking candy from a baby" I was hoping for, but game is still young.

Hmm, maybe you forgot to submit your claims form to the chess.com ratings department.
