The answer to that question depends on how you define "chess player." You probably wouldn't define it as anyone who has played at least one game of chess in their lifetime, since that would encompass pretty much every individual, at least in US and Europe, aside from kids who are too young to have played chess.

(Here's a picture of Kristen Stewart playing chess, for instance. If you define "chess player" as any person who has ever played chess then she is one of thr frontrunners in the "prettiest chess player" competition.)

On the other hand, if you define it only as people whose main occupation is playing chess competitively, then people like Anastasiya Karlovich, who play chess very well but whose jobs are oriented toward chess journalism rather than playing competitively, do not count.
