How did the Boston Red soxs fail to have a winning season?

 Answers

Less run production

Higher ERA by team

A lot of injures of key players

Let’s compare 2012 to 2011

                       W-L

Record in 2011 90-72

Record in 2012 69-93

 Run Production

2011 they scored 875 runs.  1st in MLB

2012 they scored 734 runs.  8nd in MLB

(That is 141 less runs.)

2011 they scored 5.40 runs per game.

2012 they scored 4.53 runs per game.

(That is .87 less runs per game.)

The trading away Adrian Gonzalez further weaken the offense.

 ERA by team

2011 4.20 ERA  22th in MLB

2012 4.70 ERA  27th in MLB

(That is a .50 ERA increase)

 A lot of injures

The Disable List

Starting Rotation

SP John Lackey – out for whole season

SP Daisuke Matsuzaka -- missed 22 starts

SP Clay Buchholz -- missed 3 starts

SP Josh Beckett – started 21 games and then was traded to the Dodgers

 Bullpen

CL/SU Bobby Jenks – out for whole season

CL/SU Andrew Bailey – played only 19 games

 Starting Lineup Regulars

LF Carl Crawford – played only 31 games and then got injured and was out for rest of season. Then was traded to the Dodgers

CF Jacoby Ellsbury -- played only 74 games

OF Cody Ross -- played only 130 games

DH/1B David Ortiz -- played only 90 games

2B Dustin Pedroia played 141 games (That is 18 less games than in 2011)

3B/1B Kevin Youkilis – played 42 games. Was injured multiple times and then was traded to the White Soxs.

 Bench players

OF Ryan Sweeney – played 63 games

Total of 13 out of 25 roster players injured

 The major Replacements

3B Will Middlebrooks – played 75 games and 267 at bats

1B/3B Mauro Gomez – played 37 games and 102 at bats

3B/SS/2B Pedro Ciriaco – played 76 games and 259 at bats

CF Marlon Byrd – played 34 games and 100 at bats

OF Ryan Sweeney – played 63 games and 204 at bats

OF Scott Podsednik – played 63 games and 199 at bats

LF Daniel Nava – played 88 games and 267 at bats

3B/2B/SS Nick Punto – played 65 games and 125 at bats

Conclusion the pitching was giving up more runs than the team was producing because they had key pitchers injured which included Daisuke Matsuzaka, John Lackey, Andrew Bailey, Bobby Jenks and Josh Beckett.

The team was producing less runs because of injuries of key offense players as in Pedoria, Ellsbury ,Ortiz and Youkilis. Also producing less runs because of the poor production of almost all of the replacements.

The except is 3B Will Middlebrooks.
