The Statistical Odds Of Becoming A Grandmaster!
Now don't get me wrong. I do not want to crush anybody's dreams. Just stating the facts. Also, I want to give a huge thanks to the calculator, I could not have made this without it.
All of us chess players have wanted to become a GM at some time in our lives. However, I don't think many of us realize how incredibly hard it is to do that. The odds of it are just mind blowing. I don't feel like there's anything else to say, so here are the odds of becoming a GM.
There are currently 7.6 billion people on earth. The chance of you being you is one in 7.6 billion, if my logic makes any sense. There are about 1500 GM's. My calculator says, for about every 5,070,000 people you have one Grandmaster. So there you have it, one in 5,070,000. That number is about the population of Norway. So statistically, there should be one Norwegian GM.
Here is a list of things you are more likely to be than a GM just to name a few. You are as likely to be a billionaire as chess GM.
- Olympic Athlete
- NFL player
- IM
- FM
- NM
- Armed forces of any country
- Citizen of Antarctica
- A one time climber of Mt. Everest
- A student of individual Ivy League school
- A person with an IQ over 150
- A tiger owner
- A person who worked on the Burj Khalifa
- A person who worked on the Empire State Building
- Worker at the White House
- Worker at the Pentagon
Here is a list of things you are less likely to be than a chess GM:
Well never mind, it looks like there isn't much to put on that list.
So this is it. The percent chance of becoming a GM is 0.0000197238658777%. To put that in a pie graph you pretty much just have one color.
