Fairy Pieces
Most people who play 4PC don’t know about fairy pieces. Don’t worry, this blog post is all about them. One fact is that they can be very confusing, especially their names, which they get from animals, like elephant, camel, and hawk etc. Even I don’t know the names of all of them yet! Most of them are pieces combined with the knight’s super jumping skill, and there is a fairy piece for every piece on the board (except pawns), that are combined with the knight.
Want to learn more? Then play with fairy pieces! Unfortunately, fairy pieces are only available in four player chess, and cannot be obtained on the normal chessboard. Some listed positions that include fairy pieces are Fairyland, Mega Fairly, Grasshoppers, and Camel Forest.
Fairyland and Fairyland II are very crazy setups with loads of fairy pieces. In fact, in Fairyland II the entire board is covered in fairy pieces (some of which are dead). See the picture below for the setup of Fairyland II.
Camel Forest and Camel Forest II are two player setups which have nearly all the fairy pieces that don’t come from the knight. In Camel Forest II, green has loads of the same fairy piece that can’t move., as seen below.
Mega Fairly is a setup that has all the pieces swapped with the fairy variant, which is combined with a knight. See picture below for the setup.
Finally, Grasshoppers is a setup where each side has 24 Grasshoppers, hence the name. Grasshoppers look like a bishop with the top of a rook upside down on the middle. They need another piece in front of them to move, and in their move they jump over that piece. See the picture bellow for the setup!
Other setups with fairy pieces include Fairy Attack, Fairy Crash and Ocean’s Mini.
Remember that fairy pieces are just for fun, and enjoy playing 4PC with them!
