Winless in Boston… Hmmm!  Maybe we should make a movie.  But, for that we’d need a love interest, a leading lady.   Meg Ryan?  Older now, but good enough for some of us.   Yet, no one on the Dreadnoughts quite fills the bill.  However, that never stopped me before.

But first, a short summary of the games.  The Blitz played their first match at the Boylston Chess Club, the oldest and one of the top chess clubs in the Boston area.  Unfortunately, it was a disappointing draw with the Connecticut Dreadnougts.   A big thanks to Natasha Christiansen, for staying out so late just to lock up,  and to all the board members who opened their doors and gave us a home for this match and this Wednesday night’s match with the New Jersey knockouts as well.  Come on down.  Directions are on the BCC website.

Blitz manager, NM Ilya Krasik,  rewarded the fans with just the best Blitz game of the year, and deserved winner of game of the week.   Ilya kept things completely under control and was never worse… and then BOOM.. the game exploded.   IM Steven Zierk played his heart out on the Black side of a French… Why the French?... you have to be Korchnoi to win with the French.  But, a draw against GM Kudrin really is pretty good.   IM Denys Shmelov also drew a really hard fought game with GM Rhode.  He held an advantage for quite a while, but just couldn’t push it through.    And then there is Chris, who has had some bad luck recently, and this week was no different.  As Black, he kept the game under control and could have drawn easily, but he thought he needed a win and tried a little too hard.  Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.

And Now, turn off your cell phones please, as we go to the movies.

Winless in Boston (2015)

FADE IN:

CLOSE ON ILYA

Before the match, he sits at the board gently rolling the White Queen between his fingers.  A breeze blows through the open door as teammates enter.

                                    ILYA

Mommy got sick and it happened just

like that and there was nothing

        anybody could do.

AND PULL BACK TO REVEAL:

Steven Zierk pauses arranging his pieces and raises a questioning eyebrow.

                                    ILYA

The Queen, I mean, the Queen is an important piece. If you start asking why, you’ll go crazy.

WIDE ANGLE ON TEAM:

The match is about to begin.  And Ilya is deep in concentration.

CLOSE ON ILYA

The pieces are in a frenzy, moving here and there, as Ilya analyzes his brilliant GOTW win.  The fans  swarm the board and a shower of gold colored Hershey’s Kisses reward his prowess.  Really?... Naaghhh! But, it makes good copy.   Boston (1-0)

Meanwhile, NM Chris Williams is distraught.

PULL BACK TO REVEAL

Chris has just made a not so good move.

                                    CHRIS

Why?  I just want to know why?  That’s my first rule.

I always ask why.  Come on. Tell me.   C’mon, c’mon, c’mon…

CLOSE UP ON CHRIS

He was angry, not mad angry, kinda cryin’ angry with a little touch of humor, if you know what I mean.

Take a look… maybe you can see why.

PULL BACK TO VIEW OF TEAM

Ilya was back to twirling, almost fondling, his Queen.  Chris was throwing pieces in a  wet, tear soaked bag.    Boston (1 – 1)

Now it was up to the top boards.   Were they up to it.  I had a feeling they were, but something strange was in the air.

PULL BACK TO REVEAL

Denys stands up from his board and stretches.  Steven gives him an odd glance.

                                    DENYS

I wish you would wear my dress.  I only wore it once,
and you'll barely have to do anything to it except take it in in the bust.

This drew another raised eyebrow from Steven, as both he and Denys went back to their game concentration  pose.

CLOSE  ON DENYS

He gets up slowly as a long breath of air escapes.  His opponent had even fewer chances than Ilya’s.  Tough these GMs., but, he’ll be there soon.  Boston (1.5 – 1.5)

PAN OUT AND SWING

Sweat is dripping off the fans.  What is Steven doing?  Is he winning, losing, or worse.   The Boston air breezes through the open BCC door.  Steven raises his head in disgust.  He turns to Denys and speaks.

                                    STEVEN

Just out of curiosity, do you have any friends whose names don't begin with a J?

                                  DENYS
Jed is having a slumber party New
Year's Eve and he invited me.

Ilya realizes this last game looks drawish.

Well, nice game Steven.  Boston (2 – 2)

PULL BACK

                               CHRIS

               Can I have your beer?

                               ILYA

                               Sure.

                               STEVEN

What did I used to say?  Here’s looking at you?

                               DENYS

Oh babe, I miss you so much it hurts.

Another raised eyebrow from Steven ends this match as we all stroll out to the empty street.

PAN BACK TO VIEW

Ilya puffs away at a cigarette.
