Chaturaji
Let me explain Chaturaji, which is a historical four-player chess variant from ancient India.
Chaturaji (meaning "four kings" in Sanskrit) is played on an 8×8 board with four different colored sets of pieces, typically:
- Green (West)
- Red (South)
- Yellow (East)
- Black (North)
Each player starts with 8 pieces:
1. Raja (King) - Moves one square in any direction
2. Elephant - Moves two squares diagonally (can jump)
3. Horse - Moves like a chess knight (L-shape)
4. Ship/Boat - Moves two squares orthogonally (can jump)
5. Four Pawns - Move one square forward or sideways (no diagonal moves), promote on opposite row
Key rules:
- Players move clockwise
- Dice (traditional four-sided) determine which pieces can move:
* 4: Raja or Ship
* 3: Horse
* 2: Elephant
* 1: Pawn
Scoring:
- Capturing Raja: 5 points
- Capturing other pieces: 1 point
- Game ends when three Rajas are captured
- Winner is the player with most points, not necessarily who captured most Rajas
Special rules:
- Alliances between players are not allowed
- A captured Raja's remaining pieces become inactive
- Pawns promote to ships when reaching the opponent side
