"J'adoube" the word you must to know in Chess

J'adoube is a French word that indicates 'I adjust'. This word is used in Over-The-Board(OTB) tournaments. Now you need to know when to use this word.

When to use J'adoube

As I told you before this word is used in OTB tournaments. While you are playing chess, your pieces may change their position from the centre of their square. Now you need to centre pieces into their square. So before you touch your pieces for centring the square, you must say J'adoube. (Note: Do not adjust your pieces while your opponent's move time.)

                   In other words, we can say that all tournaments we play have the touch-move rule, so you must say J'adoube before you adjust your pieces to the centre of the square when it is your turn. Do you know what the touch-move rule is?

Touch-move rule

There are three important points.

• If you touch a piece of yours, you must need to move the piece. (If it has a legal move.)

• If you take a piece of yours and release it in a square, you can't change the square. (you can change the position if the square you released is an illegal move.)

• If you take your opponent's piece which is not their king, it must be captured with any of your pieces. (If you can't capture your opponent's piece with any of your pieces, then you can play another move.)
