2020 Chess Recap | What I Learned About Chess
Hay guys, happy holidays! I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
2020 has been quite a ride, and I'm here to recap everything that has happened to me in this wild year! I hope you guys are all safe and healthy as we enter 2021.
After reading one of Attila Turzo's blogs (@AttilaTurzo), who is a great chess player, I learned about Aimchess. It is a great coaching website and offers a free 2020 recap for your chess.com account. I decided to check it out myself, and here are my results:
Wow, 500+ hours playing chess on chess.com! That's approximately 1.37 hours per day! I think this has to do a lot with the online tournaments I started playing because of the pandemic.
I've had a pretty balanced win percentage for white and black. Interestingly enough, some days I feel happier with the white pieces and worse with black, and on some days vice versa.
Some more fun facts from this report:
1. I've played 311 different opening variations!
2. My favorite opening was the Sicilian Defense.
3. I lost the most to the Reti Opening (46% win rate).
4. My blitz rating went up by ~200 rating points!
5. I played 90,825 moves
6. My longest win streak was 14(!) games.
If you'd like to see the full report, just go ahead and check out the report on Aimchess.
There weren't many OTB tournaments in 2020 (closed around beginning of March), but I still managed to...
1. Achieve my National Master title!!! (January 2020)
2. Reach 2700 puzzles, 2350 blitz, 2300 bullet, and more on chess.com.
3. Win the K-12 Showdown for 9th grade! (online and unofficial)
What I've Learned From This Experience
1. The most important thing to do when playing chess is... to have fun! Once I started experimenting with new openings and ideas, without thinking about the result of the game, my chess flourished! I managed to trap an FM's queen, win a game in 18 moves, and beat a 2500 NM in 26 moves with the Wing Gambit (which unfortunately, does not work well all the time. I have a 38% win rate with it )!
I plan to work even harder in 2021. I have quite a couple New Year's Resolutions, but for chess I plan to:
1. Achieve 2300 USCF (currently ~2200)
2. Reach 3000 puzzles on chess.com (for fun)
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed my 2020 recap. Please comment down below: What are your New Year's Resolutions? How do you plan to improve at chess? Thanks so much, see you guys next year!!!
