44'th CHESS OLYMPIAD AT CHENNAI
The 44th Chess Olympiad, organised by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) and comprising open[note 1] and women's tournaments, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess, will be held in Chennai, India during the summer of 2022. Initially, the event was supposed to take place in Khanty-Mansiysk, which hosted the Chess Olympiad 2010, along with the Chess World Cup 2019 but later FIDE decided to move it to Moscow.[1] In February 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, FIDE decided to move the event from Moscow.[2] Khanty-Mansiysk was to host the opening ceremony and the inaugural Chess Paralympics specifically designed for people with disabilities, who were allowed to participate as members of the teams representing blind, deaf and physically disabled players in the past.[1][3] The event was originally scheduled to take place from 5–17 August 2020,[4][note 2] but it was later postponed and rescheduled as a result of the growing concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] According to FIDE's calendar the event will take place in Chennai from 28 July to 10 August 2022.[6][7] The venue will be the convention center at the Four Points by Sheraton in Mahabalipuram near Chennai.[8]
