Prologue

My plan was to post something every Monday, but still, I am not ready.  Since the beginning of 2025 there has been a radical change in my chess life.  Too many factors to consider and list here and now, but I will eventually come to a resolution.  The issue at hand is how I spend my available time for Chess.  Currently, I have too much on my plate… in other words, I’m spending far to much time and effort attempting to cram in everything needed to become a chess Master before Christmas and the end of the year.

 I know better than this.

I’ve played chess since 1967, but not consistently.  In 1967 I met a neighborhood kid, three years younger than myself, who beat me eight times out of ten games in less than an hour.  I was shocked.  Nobody had actually beaten before.  Usually only lost when I made a serious mistake.  I didn’t even know they were called blunders.  I was just a kid, only 17 and still in high school. Needless to say, we became fast friends and played many times during that summer.  He let me borrow a chess book from his personal library.  I was very impressed and grateful to him when he showed me how to read chess notation.  You might say my life changed forever on that day with regards to chess.  The journey had only just begun.  I will pause here, for there is much to tell.  I will share the story in this blog a little bit now and then… stay tuned.

As any of my chess friends know, I started this blog as a way to share my experiences with playing, studying and improving my chess.  I’m not an expert, but I feel those of us who love chess and want to get better at it could benefit from my experiences, so I share them here in my blog.  Of course, playing chess is a lot of fun.  Personally, I only know of two or three friends in the real world who can actually play chess at all.  Most of my family and friends find it boring and think it’s a very hard game to play, only for nerds and geniuses with a high IQ.  Those of us who are here on Chess.com right now absolutely know the truth… chess is fun!

And there was blood on the board
