A QUEEN SACRIFICE!? The Legal Trap
Hey guys....This is @IAMDAGOAT123456789 and today we're gonna be talking about the Légal Trap! The Legal trap is a trap where white makes a what HORRIBLE Blunder at first but after that Blunder is a M2 or checkmate in 2 moves....leaving black stunned...so today, Im going to be talking about the Legal Trap for white
OVERVIEW:
- Involves a sacrifice with a QUEEN
- Requires development of pieces
- played from white
So now....lets start with the moves of the Legal Trap
The First moves of the Legal Trap are 1.e4 , e5......these moves are possibly the most common set of moves that have ever been played....there are many different traps hidden by these first moves but today is going to be about the Legal Trap here are the first moves....
After this move you ( as white ) develop a minor piece by bringing out your knight to f3 or 2.Nf3....this move is arguably the most common move after 1.e4 , e5.....people play this move to simply just develop their knight for a more better position as now white has a knight controlling and attacking the e5 pawn....and after this, blacks most common response is 2. Nc6....and this is usually always the best move to play as it defends the e5 pawn and also develops the knight at the the same time.....but instead black (for this attack to work) will play 2.d6 defending the e5 pawn and also getting the bishop a series of squares for it to move....heres a diagram
this isn't considered the best move and even computer will disagree with it since while it did open up for a bishop....look closely and you'll see that the d6 pawn is blocking the bishop that is currently on f8 and isn't allowing it to move at all...in my opinion, that bishop is usually more important than the other bishop as it gets more action during the beginning of the game than the other bishop....but anyways...after 2.d6, you as white will bring the bishop to c4 or 3.bc4...this is a very common 3rd move as its eyeing down the weak f7 square and is looking to add more pressure to it....here is the situation..
after this move, for the trap to work, black must play this rather bizarre move, 3.bg4 or bishop to g4....this might seem like a decent move at best as it doesn't have any functions...the only good thing about this move is that it pins the knight...which isn't as good when theres nothing thats going to happen after....but this move is not completely unheard of as about every 20 to 25 games, this opening might pop up once or twice....but nonetheless, its still a pretty weak move.....
After this rather weak move, you play a very nice development move, knight to F3 or Nf3....This is a very nice development move as it really takes control over more squares....Also, without this nice move, the trap wouldn't have worked as it would have provided the check needed to make the checkmate.....But After this, (there is a variation of the sequence of moves and I will show you after all the moves) black can play Nc6 or knight to c6...this is sole development move but even after this common move, you could still say white is winning as you have 2 minor pieces developed where as to they only have one minor piece....here is the diagram displaying the moves...
And so after this....you play an attacking or forcing to retreat attack, pawn to h3 or 5.h3...this a solely attacking move and the best response back could give would be to trade the bishop for a knight, but if black is greedy, (which is what Ive seen them to be) they will still try to keep the check and push their bishop back to h5 or Bh5...this move is a greedy move a obviously black is try to keep that pin and eventually try to put pressure on the knight....and is the move that would cause their downfall... here is the moves that show what Im saying....
This is a bad move as after you astonish black by playing Nxe5 or Knight takes the pawn on e5...you might think at first that this is losing plan and white has COMPLETELY lost it as the knight was pinned to the queen and now the knight has moved and the bishop can just take the queen...but thats what you want black to play as after....you play the first move in a checkmate in2 moves sequence...but at first, here is the URL
So after bishop mindlessly takes the queen..its a checkmate in 2 and black cannot stop this at ALL.....the first move in this checkmate sequence is Bxf7+ or Bishop takes the pawn on f7 which is a check....and a very good one at that as after this brilliant sequence of moves, the black king has only one square to go....Ke7 or king to e7....and after the URL...try to find where the checkmate is....
Have you found it? well did or did not, the M1 or checkmate in 1 move is Nd5# or knight to d5 which is checkmate...a nice checkmate as well as this one involves 3 minor pieces......here is the last, winning move...
There is actually another variation or way at the second development of the knight move which goes the opposite way instead of this is Nc6, bc4, then d6....here is the URL for that...
This way is the better way for black unless he sees the M2 from white...black is equal with white since and has almost similar development since the both the bishop and knight are developed and while only the knight is truly developed and is attacking center squares...the bishop is also developed and though it might not be taking control over the center, black is still in a manageable position....all until black falls for the trap and takes the queen.....but anyways thats the variation or a just another sequence of moves of the Legal Trap....here are some fun facts
TRIVIA
- Joseph Henry Blackburne is the founder of this amazing trap and was one of the top 5 players during the 19th century and was known as "Black Death"
- Légal Pseudo-Sacrifice is the other name for this trap/mate
