Discover The Surprising Opening Weapons That Give Nakamura A 83%+ Score With Black Against Top Grandmasters

Would you like a Black opening repertoire that is flexible and systematic, yet very ambitious in counterattacking our opponents early?

For the last 16 years, GM Hikaru Nakamura (pictured below) has dominated the online blitz chess scene. From conquering the Internet Chess Club with a record blitz rating of 3750 back in '09, he’s topped the Chess.com leaderboards since 2014, reaching server-wide peak ratings of 3332 blitz and 3570 bullet.

Now, top trainer and opening theoretician GM Max Illingworth is bringing you the opening repertoire of the world’s best online blitz player right in the comfort of your home.

As a teenage Candidate Master with an international rating in the 2200s, I lost several games against lower-rated players playing 1...g6 against me. I struggled to find the right way to attack Black's flexible setup, often choosing the wrong middlegame plan and getting outplayed, without knowing where I went wrong.

I had so much trouble dealing with 1...g6 as White (despite trying several systems), that I started playing 1...g6 as my main Black weapon in weekend tournaments in 2009-2010. At that time, I was busy with my final year of high school exams, meaning that I didn't have many hours a day to memorize opening theory or keep up with all the recent Grandmaster games. (Even if you do - you'd rather spend that time on more important things, right?)

So, I asked myself...what if we could avoid our opponents' pet opening systems, and force them into our territory instead?

Now you can start doing this in less than an hour, with Play 1...g6 Like Hikaru:

With Nakamura's 7854+ games of experience to guide us in how to win with 1...g6 as Black, you can easily master the surprising setups and tactics Nakamura uses to crush top Grandmasters in blitz.

I had actually played 1.d4 g6 as a back-up weapon to my usual King's Indian in 2005-06, but it wasn't until late 2009, when paired with Black against the creative attacking GM David Smerdon (pictured below), that I gained the courage to try out 1.e4 g6 for the first time.

Despite not knowing how to deal with Smerdon's 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c3, I unknowingly played in Nakamura's spirit with 3...d6 4.Bd3 Nc6 5.Ne2 e5, realizing that my opponent, almost exclusively an 1.e4 player at the time, would not feel comfortable playing d5 and c4 to reach a King's Indian structure (where I had a lot more experience). This is one of the big advantages of playing 1...g6 - we can often transpose into better versions of other openings, where our opponents feel uncomfortable.

Eventually, White got sick of the slow manoeuvring battle and lashed out with 11.g4, reaching the position below:

However, this was a mistake. As you play 1...g6, you will find very often that your opponents pick the wrong middlegame plan, as I did far too often when facing the Modern Defence as a teenager.

I met the flank attack with a central counter in 11...Nf7 12.Na3 d5, reaching a winning position in just 17 moves with Black - something that rarely happens in main line openings like the Berlin and Najdorf. I was so close to my first ever tournament win against a Grandmaster, but I underestimated my opponent's swindling attempts and the game ended a draw.

Nonetheless - I got the better side of a draw against a player 300 points higher rated than me, in my first ever game with 1.e4 g6 - which tells you how easy it is to play 1...g6 and outplay your opponents with it! (By the way, my inspiration to play 1...g6 in this game was another creative GM, Tiger Hillarp Persson, pictured below)

So you see, unlike most Black repertoires, Play 1...g6 Like Hikaru has plans that are easy to understand and implement.

Versus 1.e4, we prepare the ...c5 break to destroy the opponent's centre, and steer play toward an improved Sicilian Dragon.

Versus 1.d4, we prepare ...e5, often reaching an improved King's Indian where we get the aggressive kingside pawn storm with ...f5 in one go.
