Philidor's Endgame Quiz - Part 1

Philidor's Endgame Quiz - Part 1

To become a titled player, it is vitally important to study the endgame.

While preparing endgame material for my students, I noticed that Philidor had analysed a lot of very instructive endgame positions - not just the famous 'Philidor position' in the rook endgames.

Did you know that there is also a 'Philidor position' in the Queen vs. Rook endgame, and the Rook + Bishop vs. Rook endgame?

We will cover those two pawnless endgames in Part 2 of this mini-series. For now, I will share with you some other instructive endgames that Philidor analysed.

Good luck in Philidor's endgame quiz - some of his positions have tripped up even the best players in the world!

When you have finished the puzzle, make sure to check out my notes and explanations afterwards

Question 1 - Knight vs. Pawn (easy)

Question 2 - The Basic Philidor Position (easy)

Question 3 - Winning Against A 'Bad' Philidor (easy)

Question 4 - Holding the 'Bad Philidor' Position (medium)

Study Break - Holding the Bad Philidor Continued

I don't include the next game as a question, as White has a few different moves to hold this endgame, and also, Philidor initially thought it was a win for Black in his analyses. Enjoy my breakdown of this important endgame, which every player rated 2000+ should know

Question 5 - Winning with Queen vs. Pawn (easy)

Question 6 - Winning with an Extra Pawn (easy)

Here is the way the game could conclude from the final position of the puzzle:

Question 7 - Mined Squares (easy)

Incidentally, Black can even lose this endgame, if his king takes a crazedwalk to the queenside:

Question 8 - The Trebuchet

How did you go with the questions?

Which endgame techniques were new to you?

How are you going to apply and hone these endgame concepts in your own games?
