Fighter Namesakes

So, as you know, there are many fighter aircraft, and lots of names circulating for the fighters, but occasionally manufacturers of fighters like to name their new planes after one of their successful, older planes. That's what we're going to look at right now.

1.

McDonnel FH-1 Phantom & McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II

The McDonnell FH-1 Phantom was one of the only jets to fly during the second world war. It was a naval aircraft, and it had folding, unswept wings, 2 jet engines, 4x Browning .50 caliber machine guns, plus 8x 5 inch High Velocity Air Rockets (HVARs)

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was also a naval aircraft, albeit a later built jet, with swept wings, a top speed greater than Mach 2 in later models as opposed to the FH-1 Phantom's top speed of 505 mph, and in models E and after it was equipped with a 20mm M61A1 Vulcan canon, plus an assortment of bombs and rockets available. A true legend for sure.

2.

Lockheed P-38 Lightning & Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II

The P-38 Lightning, as you know from my Top 10 Favorite aircraft post, is one of my favorite aircraft. It was one of the first aircraft which had 2 engines instead of just one. It had a gigantic payload, along with 1x 20mm Hispano V canon, and 4x Browning .50 caliber machine guns. It was also one of the first aircraft to have tricycle landing gear, which made it easier to take off and especially easy to land, and now all aircraft have that style.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, the U.S. Navy's best fighter, also being exported to other allies to the United States. It is also a top-of-the-line fighter, one of the only modern fighter jets to have only one engine, like the F-16 Fighting Falcon. It is named "Lightning II" after both the P-38 and English Electric Lightning, but mostly the P-38, since the P-38 was made by Lockheed, now Lockheed Martin.

3.

Vought F4U Corsair & Ling-Temco-Vought(LTV) F-7 Corsair II

The Vought F4U Corsair was yet another legendary airplane of WWII, and the Korean War. I elaborate upon the Corsair in my last two posts, so I won't go into too many details here. Know that it was an awesome fighter, and a great bomber. Had guns or canons, plus bombs and rockets, and drop tanks if necessary.

To be completely honest, I don't know that much about the A-7 Corsair II, so I can't say anything about it... :/

And that's all, folks!
