Dog Man Movie Review
Wow. This movie was... just what you would have expected from a Dog Man movie. Chaotic,
...and that's about it.
In today's blog, I will be jumping into the Dog Man universe and sharing my thoughts on the film... becaue I have a lot. So...
Welcome to the Dog Man movie review.
I don't think Petey & Lil' Petey were cast well. I've never been a fan of Pete Davidson, I've always thought of him to be super odd so... yeah; I don't think he was the right man for the job here; I really liked Mirage from Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, but I mean... any celebrity could have played him, am I right???
*Crickets Crickets*
I'm right. I'm always right.
ANYWAYS, I also didn't like the casting for Lil' Petey. I know this sounds dumb; just ranting on about actors playing CARTOON CHARTERS but... I'm special, okay?
As I was saying, this little kid that nobody knows ( He's literally almost non-existent on the web ) named Lucas Hopkins Calderon played Lil' Petey and... I don't know... of course I can't remember any SPECIFIC lines he delivered, I just didn't think he was the best voice they could have gotten.
This movie had a new plot every 5 minutes and it was still word-for-word what I expected:
( My review before I saw the movie ⬆
*Clears Throat* Yes.
In that blog, I say things like "It seems that Dreamworks is trying to take every single Dog Man book and make it into one big project." and how in the books... "One second Dog Man's chasing some gray squirrels and then the next, there's a freaking building attacking the city". I also note that "I don't think Petey was cast very well and I'm worried that they're gonna try too hard to cram every last detail in."
...and that's exactly what they did. One second Dog Man's chasing some gray squirrels and then the next, there's a freaking building attacking the city. It's so true. ( Go blow 400 bucks on a single movie ticket and you'll better understand what I'm talking about )
Another thing I thought while I was in the theater was... "This would have been WAY better as a TV show". I mean, first of all, the intro was very TV-series like:
INTRO @24:18 ⬆
And there were like 754 different plot lines so... go knock yourself out, Dav. I don't know why you chose to make this a movie.
Also, this is totally random, but I noticed how similar this animation style was compared to the Max And The Midknights series:
( I don't know why that's an actually good picture, the real show stunk... )
Why did Petey's grandpa literally have like 3 minutes of screen time; he's such a big character in the books but almost the second after he was introduced he became irrelevant... but I guess that goes for a lot of things in that movie...
...like my boy Big Jim; he was not respected at all in this movie; I mean, just look at this:
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO HIM. I'M SUING.
Dog Man's full backstory was NOT in the books. ( The idea of it is insanely dark, if you really think about it... )
Yes, the whole bomb accident thing was there, but everything else about Officer Knight's girlfriend and his house, was definitely not. ( "It was never this deep." - @nbrasington )
As I very briefly mentioned earlier, recently the Dog Man books have been getting supa deep and stuff. He's chasing squirrels, he's fighting buildings, and then all of a sudden, Petey's talking about his dead mom. Huh? I don't pick up a book called "Dog Man" to read about a cat's mom dying. Sorry, Petey.
I don't know WHY Dav just decided that he's gonna start making these books have a serious message and add in all these deep topics; it's a dumb children's graphic novel made for the first grade about a dog with a man's body that fights crime.
...it's not as complex as I just made it sound. ( Maybe just don't think about it too hard 🤣 )
I'm just gonna say it, you can't appreciate this film if you haven't read the books. And I know that point doesn't go very well with the last point I just made, but besides that one part about the tragic backstory, this movie mostly stayed true to the series.
I will say though, ( You could take this in 1 or 2 different ways but... ) why is the mayor a woman.
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
ANYWAYS, I can't really explain this note as much, you just have to be a big Dog Man fan to really know what I mean.
I can't really say I was disappointed with this film since I predicted almost everything at one point or another, but overall, yeah.
I thought this movie was actually pretty good. ( And I'm not just saying that; I genuinely thought it was a good movie ) If you go see this film, just remember what your favorite movie critic, @Jehtt said.
...because I'm always right. 😉
