All chess game modes, ranked
Here, I will be ranking all chess game modes, including all variants, not including puzzles, enjoy :-)
(my blog has been kinda dead lately so I'm reviving it :-D)
1. Daily
Daily's pretty good, I like daily because I actually get to think about my moves and play really well and you can even win easily in 1 day games because most opponents just forget to play and you win that game, but a lot harder to win on time in 3-7 day games. I also really like the conditional moves feature, it's really nice and I use it when there's a good chance my opponent will play a certain move, and it makes the game go faster. Overall, daily is actually awesome if you don't forget to play. (A tier)
2. Blitz
I personally am trash at 3 2 games, maybe it's different for you guys but 5min for me is super efficient and gives me enough time to think of moves. And don't get me started on 5 2 >:-) Anyways, I've noticed that in Blitz especially in 3min that if you are behind on time, it's going to take BULLET SKILLS to get your time back up, but other than time trouble, blitz is pretty good for me (B tier)
3. Bullet
I chose the image of a rabbit for obvious reasons, Bullet is SUPER FAST! I don't really play bullet much anymore because I can't keep up with the speeds and at my level (800-900) doesn't really help me improve at chess in general because people at my level either play bad moves to keep up with the time or they just play fried liver xD. 2 1 bullet is alright, haven't tried it much but is good for thinking about your moves a TINY bit... (at this point just play Blitz or Rapid) but 1min is super fast, 1 1 games can get pretty annoying sometimes as you can't think about ANYTHING so you're in a losing position and then the game goes on for AGES because of how fast your opponent suddenly plays... 30 sec is great for people who just want to get their ratings up and play nonsense moves, 20sec 1 is idk what to say about this... anything LOWER THAN 20 SECONDS is just you just want to play and win because of time and get 3.4 accuracy. (C tier)
4. Bughouse
Bughouse can be a pretty fun variant of chess if your communicating with your team members and helping them win the game if they have a winning position, even with sacrifices involved, but if you don't communicate, it will only make your bughouse experience harder (A tier)
5. Rapid
I used to love rapid back in the lower ratings when people actually made moves in less than a minute, but now, in my level, people take SO LONG on moves... 2-3min moves. (My tip: just have chess in the background and play Google Snake as your waiting for your opponent to finally make a move like idk) 15 10 is okay, 30 mins is just begging for your opponent to take five minutes on a move xD (60+ minutes on a game is INSANE, like I wouldn't even touch 120 60 unless I'm a grandmaster at an official real life chess tournament but 120 60 is just begging for the game to be 7hrs long I wouldn't spend more than an hour on a SINGULAR game) overall rapid is fine (B tier)
6. 3-Check
So in this game mode, you're supposed to check your opponent's king 3 times, hence the name 3-Check. (Knights are SUPER op in this variant) These games either end super quickly or super slowly. I like 3-Check >:-) (A tier)
7. Crazyhouse
Crazyhouse is fun for absolutely DESTROYING your opponent's pieces in chess with forks, and immediately passed pawns and gaining a 50 point advantage but the matchmaking for crazyhouse needs to be better lol. #MAKEPEOPLEPLAYCRAZYHOUSE because the only people I'm able to play against in crazyhouse is 1200s-1500s and is super unfun unless I play in a tournament. The game itself is a (B tier)
8. Spell Chess
Spell chess is fun but often times can be very unexpected. The spells work really well and cool and almost every time I play I suddenly understand how to play again xD. But its easier than it looks. A complete masterpiece, also the grass background and the chess pieces are wonderful. (S tier)
9. Duck Chess
First of all, why is this rubber duck for sale for $195 (???) and why does the icon for Duck Chess look like the Twitter (I mean X sorry elon musk) logo?? Anyways, duck chess is fun and gets super hilarious when I capture my opponents queen and put a duck in front of all of their defense LOL. Duck chess is valid :-) (A tier)
10. Fog of WAR
First of all, I have nothing to say about this variant. I've played it many times and it was pretty hard to move because basically every move is a risk in a way. I can't even do e5 playing as black because of the possibility that white played d4. Capturing the king to win is a good idea though. (B tier)
11. Giveaway
'Tis the season! (Sorry I keep forgetting its literally the day before February) But giveaway is I don't really know. I cant tell if its just a ME problem or an EVERYBODY problem. I'm still struggling what the point of this mode is and you cant move any pieces unless there's a capture available. (Note: I am currently playing giveaway while making this blog post because of curiosity) I am going to lose the next FIVE games of Giveaway GUARANTEED. (C tier)
12. Atomic
Similar to 3-Check, any capture you make makes any surrounding pieces in a close range disappear, so you have to eliminate your opponent's king. These games just end way too quickly because almost every game I play, my opponents use knights. (knights are so op, you can win in around 3 moves) (B tier) I guess...
13. Setup Chess
I love this variant because of how creative you can be and how you can set up your own chess army... Remember folks: Queens are so overrated and take up to many points, and bishops are way too op if you place them on corners >:-) (A tier)
14. Horde
I actually recreated this mode with many different positions, like 40 rooks vs 30 queens... something like that. This game is really fun if you have the pawns and like attacking with a huge advantage (I wouldn't call it one) and no king that will be the weakness of your game. If you like defending, though, you can defend with the regular chess setup on your side only. (B tier)
15. Daily 960
Daily 960 is super fun for me while I get to think about my moves and win the game with random positions. A complete W. (A tier)
16. Live 960
1min Live 960 is absolutely stressing and terrifying and super bad for new players who have random positions and have to play super fast. 3-5min Live 960 is awesome because that's my pace while I play 960, no joke 5min 960 made my rating increase by 200-300. You would think that 10+min Live 960 is better for thinking about your moves but it is harder for me (idk why). (A tier)
17. King of the Hill (KOTH)
Saving the best for middle! (I'm super funny) King of the Hill (KOTH) is my FAVORITE chess variant because of how FUN it is to continuously check your opponent as their king is trying to get to the center in full panic mode. Most times I even checkmate in these games because it's just their king in the center all alone :-D but sometimes I just castle my king and let all of my other pieces do the action as my king just eats popcorn and soda waiting for the win :-) (S tier) It's so good, my first S tier :-D (Edit: my second S tier! When I came back to add more variants, I moved this close to the bottom of the list.)
18. Racing Kings
For me, Racing Kings is SUPER og because this was my first ever variant that I've ever played. It's similar to King of the Hill (KOTH) while you rush your king to the top in a panic, and watch all of your opponent's pieces come into action and set you back so far (glad there's no checkmate) but overall its a great mode (A tier)
19. XXL Chess
Watch the game be super confusing and hard to play... just kidding! This game is awesome once you understand how all 20+ pieces move and you WILL have a great time. I really like how much creativity it took to make all of these new pieces like "camel"... Too good. (A tier)
20. Seirawan Chess
I really like how you can combine a Knight and Bishop together to an archbishop and Knight and Rook to a chancellor. (HOW DO THEY GET THESE NAMES I NEED TO KNOW) You see, this is the collab we all needed. I've never played this variant before so I can't judge too hard. (I can't play because no one plays that variant and the queue takes SO long)
21. Paradigm Chess30
I have no idea how to play this LOL, though, dragon bishops sound super cool and op.
____
While none of the variants and time controls of chess aren't considered bad but could be non-helpful because of some circumstances, everyone has their different feelings about all of the chess modes so if you want, comment how you feel about every mode of chess :-)
