Tournaments with Timur: The Backstory!

Five months ago, I caught the infamous Covy D and was dragged down with chronic fatigue. As a result, I had mixed feelings about jumping back into the chess world. While chess tournaments are always exciting, would I have the endurance? I assumed that I wasn't ready until my brother Gus and Joseph Truelson blackmailed took me to the World Open for the side events.

Blackmail 101. Highly successful!

My doubts immediately fell away; the World Open was incredible! I loved playing and chatting chess with everyone and exhausted myself by allowing myself to get too excited. There was chess to be played! I also enjoyed supporting my brother Gus in the U1400 section - especially with his dynamic style. Here are three notable games - watch for the King Postulate!

Especially memorable was playing blitz and chatting with the great Timur Gareyev.

Timur is one of the most welcoming people I've ever met. Humble and kind, Timur goes out of his way to include and encourage others. It wasn't just an act either as after the World Open he started inviting me to join him for various tournaments. I turned down the first two as I needed to rest and recover, but soon I realized how generous Timur was being and took him up on his offer.

After a chess road trip with Marck Cobb, I was ready to join Timur and play some chess.

Marck Cobb was such a warm host! I'm proud to know him.
We also stopped by the Saint Louis Chess Club on the way.

Despite heights being one of my worst fears, we went skydiving to warm up.

Stay tuned for part 2 where I discuss the tournaments and analyze notable games!
