This is a line played in both bughouse and crazyhouse, although I don't think it is as good an option in crazyhouse. In bughouse, there are certainly more sound openings that leave white with better odds overall but I still think this opening has its place. It is an option for an aggressive player with the white pieces who likes sharp positions and wants the game decided on his or her board. It requires a good understanding of tactical patterns and king safety. I believe I have the most experience with this line as white and I wanted to share some of that experience with you.
Nima's Gambit
At the highest levels of bughouse, openings are nearly premoved 15 moves in. Time is of the utmost importance and a 2 second lead often yields a decisive edge in an equal match. Thus when I analyze bughouse openings, I always start out with what to do if no pieces come. Of course, there may be thoughts or ideas or improvements if you have a queen or a minor piece at select points but those are secondary aims and clearly the possibilities are endless so I do not cover them all. But take a look at the above opening.
If you have ideas for improvement for either side, I would love to hear them in the comments. Also, if you enjoyed this and want me to publish more commentary on bughouse openings, please let me know in the comments. If you know how to upload a bughouse position with piece placements, please let me know that as well.
