What we know.

Our God is sovereign. (Gen. 50:20)

Jesus died to take away the sting of death. (1 Cor. 15:55)

Jesus rules heaven and earth. (Col. 1:15-20)

What we don’t know.

How quickly this disease will spread.

How many people will die.

When we will be able to continue life as normal.

Social-distancing… yes it will probably help slow the geometric spread of the virus, yes it is a good way to help preserve life, no it is not the ultimate Christian response. One important thing that I am not hearing from the Christian community is a move to respond to the realization that our nation is filled with unsaved, some unknown number (possibly quite large) of which are going to die. The Christian response is to recognize that life, while sacred, is not important to the Christian, the Christian has been set free from the fear of death. The apostle Paul even writes of his willingness to die even while accepting the fact that God still had plans for his ministry. The Christian response to the virus is to witness to those who still live under the fear of death, and to serve in the community to better the physical, but more importantly, the spiritual readiness of our nation for a brush with death.

I do think that those who are at risk (elderly, those with respiratory problems, chronically ill) should isolate themselves, but I do thing that the sound of body have no excuse for shrinking from their duty to witness to and serve those in harms way.
