An Unforgettable Chess Move! - Best of the 1900s - Krejcik vs. Krobst, 1908
Playing a brilliant move is a thrilling experience. Whether it's in a classical tournament or a mindless blitz game, finding that sound, incisive, and counter-intuitive move that fully merits the mystical "!!" is a special thing. It's rare for unknown players to play immortal games, but an immortal move? Well, those happen all the time! Many of the finest combinations in chess history have been played by players who were not masters.
Today's game is truly a beautiful effort with many fine moments, but it is White's 18th move that is absolutely unforgettable. With an attack on the cusp of breaking through on the h-file, White is not quite able to close the game due to the prospect of Black's ...d5 white would free the c8-bishop. So what does he do? He simply buries the bishop with a quite move at the cost of his rook!
