Dear Chess Friends!

Every chess player dreams of reaching a situation where the ultimate, decisive combination will result in an immediate triumph. These "final combinations"—the tactical strikes at the end of a game—are critical for converting complicated positions into easy victories. I recently studied this intriguing topic in depth at my chess workshop, and I'm delighted to share some key insights with you today.

In complex positions with mutual chances, the goal of a final combination is simple: destroy any residual defensive resources that your opponent may have. Successfully completing such a combination either results in a quick checkmate or transitions into a technically winning position, leaving your opponent with no counterplay.

If you missed the workshop, you can watch the full recording here:

Essential Conditions for Final Combinations:

  • A Weak King: Your opponent's king lacks appropriate defense.
  • Weaknesses in the enemy camp include exploitable targets such as vulnerable pawns and unprotected squares.
  • Poorly Placed Enemy Pieces: Pieces that are out of sync or improperly positioned and fail to defend successfully.
  • The likelihood of winning endgames: A clear transition into a favorable endgame scenario.

Types of final combinations:

  • Checkmate Combinations are direct attacks aiming at instantly checkmating your opponent.
  • Material-winning tactics include using forks, pins, and skewers to trap enemy pieces.
  • Exchange Combinations: Strategic exchanges that simplify the position and result in a clear win.
  • Pawn Promotion: Combinations designed to advance and promote pawns to queens.

Understanding and mastering these combinations not only sharpens your tactical skills, but also increases your practical chess strength, allowing you to completely capitalize on winning opportunities.

During my workshop, we looked at eight instructive game fragments in which carefully executed final combinations decided the outcome. Each scenario illustrated critical tactical trends that every ambitious chess player should be familiar with. If you were unable to attend the live event, don't worry—you may still profit from this deep tactical dive!

I've also shared the PGNs containing all eight game fragments demonstrated during the workshop. Studying these examples will undoubtedly enhance your tactical vision and increase your confidence in executing winning combinations during your games.

2) Nikolay Popov - Arkady Novopashin

5) Valentina Borisenko-Belova - Zara Nakhimovskaya
6) Janos Rigo - Lajos Szell

Let's unlock the power of decisive tactics together. Remember, spotting the combination is half the battle—executing it with precision is what transforms promising positions into victories.

Good luck, and may your combinations always find their mark!

Today I am focusing on teaching chess online and offline. The reason why I do this is because I feel happy when see how my students achieve success.

I teach juniors since 2002. Almost all of my students were ranked. Some of them got prizes at Novosibirsk region Championship.
I also work with adults.

I will teach you how to find tactical strikes in certain position types and how to classify them. I can help you to improve you calculational ability. I also teach you chess openings and I believe you know how important they are. According to the statistics right-playing of the opening makes from 30 to 60% of your success (the exact number depends on your level).
