The Immortal Draw
Probably not many of you of you who are reading this have heard of this immortal game. Lets without any dillydallying dive right in.
We start with just a few typical moves.
1. e4 e5
2. Nc3 Bc5
This next move is just slightly lame. White plays,
3. Na4
But then an romantic awesome wonderful move is played. A normal move would be like Be7
3. Na4 Bf2
Kaboom! Philip Meitner sends a fireball rolling across the board.
4. Kxf2 Qh4
There are several moves here which do not work so I will not show them. Here is the best one.
5. Ke3 Qf4
Time out!
In the Time Out section we back up and take a closer look at the game on a real board.
In the time out section we look at the position on a real chess board.
Chasing that king up the board.
6. Kd3 d5
The only move to open up the board and move the pieces out.
7. Kc3
Probably the best move. There is a crazy variation here which you can find here.
7. Kc3 Qxe4
Attacking the knight.
8. Kb3 Na6
Threatening mate.
9. a3
The king wants to come back to a2 then b1
9. a3 Qxa4+
Kaboom! A wonderful queen sacrafice.
10. Kxa4 Nc5
Time Out!
A wonderful move
11. Kb4 a5+
12. Kc5
Why can't the king go back to Kc3 you might ask. Because of 12. Kc3 d4 13. Kc4 Be6
12. Kc5 Ne7
Lets see if you can fine the deadly threat here.
13. Bb5+ Kd8
Threatening checkmate with b6. Can white find the defense?
14. Bc6
Now the king wants to run on the white squares back to a2
14. Bc6 b6+
The king starts on his walk.
15. Kb5 Nxc6
Time Out!
16. Kxc6 Bb7+
Forcing the draw. If the king takes Kd7. There is no way to stop Rb6#
17. Kb5 Ba6
But why can't the white king continue on his walk? Because of Bc4 and then b5#.
At the next repetition they drew.
18. Kxc6 Bb7+ 1/2-1/2
