Cheating in chess, whether over the board (OTB) or online, is a serious violation of the game's principles and ethics. It undermines the integrity of chess competitions and can have severe consequences for both the individual involved and the reputation of the sport. Let's discuss cheating online wich is the most common one.

Cheating in online chess has become a significant concern as the popularity of online platforms has grown. The anonymity provided by the internet, coupled with the accessibility of powerful chess engines, has made it easier for some individuals to engage in dishonest practices. But lets first let's talk about what counts as cheating according to Chess.com.

  • Engines - You may not use any engines to analyse ongoing games! This includes Chessmaster, Fritz, Komodo, Houdini, Stockfish, Chessbase with any active UCI engine, etc.
  • Tablebases - Tablebases are chess databases that contain every possible move for endgames of up to 7 pieces. These will always lead to a win when a win is possible, and are for that reason the same as asking an engine to analyse a position. Tablebases are not allowed!
  • Help from other people - You may not ask for help from another person! Do not ask anyone for advice on specific ongoing games! Do not let anyone else play on your account!
  • Books, opening databases, or any outside help at all! - For Live games on Chess.com, if you are looking at anything other than the game in front of you, you shouldn’t be! Focus on your game, and play with your own mind and strength!
  • Fixing game results - Arranging games, playing with multiple accounts or losing intentionally are also against the rules!

Now that we covered what counts as cheating, I'll give some tips on how to tell if someone is cheating in chess game.

- Win rate: If someone  has a win rate of 75-90 percent it's probally that the owner of the account is cheating. The avarage win rate on chess.com is about 45-50 percent, Magnus Carlsen has a 70.6% win rate at the time I'm posting this blog.

- Accuracy: If a player has a high avarage accuracy, like 90% in a new account they are probally cheating.

- Rating: If a player has a rating growing too fast is a sign they're cheating, since improving in chess takes time, it's not something that changes over night.

- Slow moves: If you're a game with someone that in between every move is taking a few seconds to play even on the most obvious moves, is a sign they're cheating, Imagine this you're a game and you only have a single legal move, you'll do it right away, since you have no other option, a cheater in the other hand dosen't know what they're doing, so they'll take time to "think" even when is not to think about.

- Consistent brilliant moves: Everyone likes brilliant moves, but they're very risky and humans most of the time like to play safe and  don't sac every piece, but AI engines don't care about that since they have everything already calculated, so a cheater will sac his pieces safely because they know that they're gonna win, but that's a giveaway that they're cheating since humans have a way do play different than a souless AI.

These are my tips to finding chess cheaters, I really hope i helped, this is probally not new to more advanced and intermediary players, but I wanted to make this to help and inform new and beginner players, like me for an example.
