The lowest possible rating

Technically, the lowest Elo rating a person can have is 100. I can say with much certainty that very few players have reached this level. However, there have been more than one, (I checked, it's true) so this article should just end here. Right?

Not quite. It turns out that the rating system on chess.com lets you go all the way to zero. Now, it's clear that just any troll could get here. But, there is a player who I believe is not a troll, and has made it to zero. And I want to give them some advice.

I don't have permission to use this player's name, due to the fact that they are very inactive. But I will say that if you search for players with a rating range of 0 to 1 in daily chess, you will find them very quickly. I would actually encourage that some players with a lower rating do this, as their games are very instructive.

For example, look at this game. The player we are talking about is playing white:

There are many things you could take away from this Chess960 game. But I want you to forget all that for a moment, and look at the final position. White resigned here. Except, white has a win on the board.

Even though I'm sure not everyone could see the win the computer found, but any beginner should know not to resign so early. In fact, I would even say that people below 1200 should never resign!

This problem pops up in almost every game by this player. They tend to make insane resignations in positions that are mostly not lost yet! Here's a second example, with the same two players, but with the colors reversed:

I think it's clear that our star player doesn't have enough understanding to be resigning yet. They should instead be studying books and other resources first.
Well, that's all from me today. Bye!

This blog is dedicated to helping lower-rated players and beginners learn new things about chess, one article at a time.
