Today's Daily Puzzle 8/13/20: Double-Check Your Opponent Before You Wreck Your Opponent
Ok I know it's a cheesy title, but I had to do it .
For those who are newer to the game, a good rule to know when calculating checks is that if you can get your opponent into double-check (that is, making a move where two of your pieces are threatening the king) the king must move. This isn't a rule in chess, it's a mathematical fact. There's no way to get out of a double-check in any other fashion than moving your king.
Thus when you see a double-check on the board you can immediately rule out any other options other than asking "where could the king go?". In today's puzzle we notice that (similar to 8-11's puzzle) the king is a bit too far up the board for a late middlegame like the position we have. Not only that, but the king seems a bit boxed in as well. Perhaps there's some mating ideas? Let's Double-Check:
How did you do today? Did you find the double-check?
