Today's Daily Puzzle 8/19/20: Bishops Are Snipers

About three weeks ago, my wife and I babysat a 14 year old boy for about a week. Of course, one of the first ideas I had to keep him entertained was to teach him how to play chess. I pulled out the Staunton set, placed the pieces side by side and started introducing him to the names. When I got to the bishop, I said "This is a bishop".

"A what?"

"A bishop." Knowing that he played a lot of  video games like Call of Duty, I decided to nickname the piece to something he might resonate with more than the name for a holy church figure. "They're called bishops, but they're basically like snipers. They camp out on one side of the board and can snipe enemies from long distance."

This instantly clicked with him and after many games of chess I'm 100% confident that he doesn't even remember the name "bishop". For him chess consists of: pawns, knights, snipers, rooks, queen, king.

And you know what? I like the term a lot. Shall we get a chess nomenclature revolution going? Some 1700 player from Texas is re-naming the pieces, look out chess world.

Today's puzzle is great evidence for my hypothesis that bishops snipers are rightly named. Sitting back on the bottom right corner, they are silently and dangerously aimed at the king. Waiting for just the right moment to strike. They'll let the foot soldiers do the dirty work to open up the fortress for the snipers to take a clear shot.

How did you do today? Did you deploy the snipers to their full potential? Comment below!
