Chess in 1960
1960... Edith Piaf is singing Je ne regrette rien from Paris. Hitchcock's Psycho is released in cinema halls. The world is in some tension... Wrong start! As this blog isn't a review of what happened in chess in 1960. I couldn't just find a more appropriate head title...
Recently came in my hands the 9th volume [1960] of the greek chess magazine "MAT". A small monthly magazine of around 16 pages, published during the years 1952-1965 by Spyros Bikos [full title: Το Ματ: Μηνιαία Σκακιστική Επιθεώρησις / Revue Grècque Mensuelle d’Échecs. Check also Chess Periodicals by Di Felice, p. 122, entry 1437].

Spyros Bikos was a significant figure of Greek chess world during these years and has distinguished himself in the chess problem area too.

Spyros Bikos [1911-1987] possibly around 1979[?]. Photo taken from E. Manolas' blog, where a small bio. Check also this reminiscing article by P. Sklavounos | A distinction in chess composing in 1974 chess Olympiad in Nice. 3rd prize for a two mover, with D. Kapralos. From Problemas de ajedrez by J. A. Coello, 2002, p. 287 |

Anyway... I started browsing through it. Then checking the games that were presented. Of course the Tal-Botvinnik world championship match was dominating some of the issues, but there were more. It was beautiful, as many players were unknown to me. So decided to pick some games I liked and give them here [Tal-Botvinnik match excluded]...

A fascinating game by Walther. His above photo was the only one I've found. It's a detail of one with Bobby Fischer in Zurich 1959. In this Zonal, none of them [or from the following game] advanced I think [check https://www.mark-weeks.com/chess/zonals/1960-63.htm].

Golz vs Panggabean, 14th chess Olympiad, Leipzig 1960
No photos... and generally unknown to me players.
Werner Golz, an other player of East Germany at the time. Seems that published a book with Paul Keres in 1972, Schönheit der Kombination. In this Olympiad [ that was won by USSR], he was 2nd reserve. Dame Panggabean, reserve for Indonesia in this Olympiad. And I don't know if there are any more games by him, except this event.

Just solve this beautiful tactic...
