Emanuel Lasker (Wch: 1894-1921)
Among the world champions, Emanuel the Second is known as (one of) the most gifted defensive player. Reigning between 1894 and 1921 he could perfectly read his opponents' intentions, being able to look a few more steps ahead than his opponent. Likely as a result of his mathematical background, he was a great tactician as well. In the next game the young Lasker at the age of 21, four years before he became world champion, devoured his prey in a combined tactical as technical style.
