Finishing touch of the World Champions: Max Euwe
Max Euwe was the fifth world champion. In 1935 he defeated the reigning champion Alexander Alekhine. Euwe held the crown for merely 2 years. His 'abdication' was ensured by Alekhine in 1937.
In daily life, Euwe was a doctor of mathematics. Therefore, it was no coincidence that his main strength in chess lied in his tactical resourcefulness. "His style was clear and straightforward", according to Capablanca. See the next game for example.
The position seems to be so balanced and solid for black: trying to find an advantage for Euwe is like looking for a needle in a haystack. With Euwe's mathematical eye for detail however, he managed to create something real within a couple moves. The poor position of the c8-bishop is the key to success.
