As one of the most wonderful chess events of the year is taking place, the golden oldies (i.e. my series: Finishing touch from the World Champions) have to wait for a little while. In Batumi, Georgia, the 43rd Olympiad is being held. Please have a look at: http://batumi2018.fide.com/en

Naturally, I'll be watching my fellow country(wo)men with great interest. The Dutch men's team consists of the following 5 GM's:

  • Anish Giri ( Fide-rating: 2780);
  • Erwin L'Ami (2639);
  • Loek van Wely (2642);
  • Jorden van Foreest (2624), and;
  • Sergey Tiviakov (2604).

In round 2, yesterday, they faced the Scottish team. The Netherlands won with a score of 4-0. On board 1 Top seed Anish Giri showed how to play with hanging pawns in a fashionable style:

Erwin l'Ami played in positional style the Ruy Lopez and finished the game off with a delicate small king's move.

In case you would like to learn more about the techniques and tactics of the GM's, applying their methods in your own games, please contact me at: werlechessschool@hotmail.com or on chess.com. I give personal courses on internet on all levels on categorized themes, such as weak king, defending, strong square, open file/ ranks/ diagonals, dominance, fortresses etc.
