The Smart Ruy Lopez: Exchange Variation

The Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation (1.e4, e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6) is an easy line to play, contrary to the difficult main lines arising after 4.Ba4. Avoiding all the long and winding theoretical lines White gets the better pawn structure and a slight positional plus.

Notwithstanding, in many variations, like in the Pin-variation (5.0-0 Bg4 – see below) many unexplored tactical blows prove dangerous for Black. The healthy pawns, extra space in the center, and lead in development is the reason why world champions like Bobby Fischer and Emanuel Lasker LOVE playing 4.Bxc6 in must-win games.

In the next diagrams and posts I want to give you an impression how the Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation can be a source of continual trouble for our opponent!
