How good or bad is the Grob opening?
Hello and welcome to today’s blog in the series Collab-A-Blog and today i have A special guest which is none other than… @MapleSyrup4444 and before we continue can you please take the time to read his blogs here: https://www.chess.com/blog/maplesyrup4444. And any references of the grob beang "bad " its maple so dont get mad at me. Now that we got that done lets get into the story,
The Grob is a chess opening that barely anyone plays, simply because it is the worst opening move according to StockFish, the world’s best chess engine. But is this opening really that bad? Today we will show you how bad (or good) the Grob can really be.
Chapter 1: How to play the Grob?
The Grob consists of these moves,
1.g4
(insert chess board here showing g4 as a blunder)
That’s it.
So the reason why some chess players dislike the Grob is because it’s the one moves that most chess coach’s and experienced players don’t recommend playing because it doesn’t fight for the center (like most chess players are taught) and it leaves the pawn undefended and black can simply play pawn to d5 and capture it on the next move. Even if you defend it, black will take all the space in the center and develop, leaving white with a bad position. (insert chess board here of what Grob position could look like and the analysis for it)
Chapter 2: Does the Grob really deserve all the hate it gets?
Alright, so by now you may be thinking that the Grob is:
A garbage opening that you should never play or the best opening to some
The worst chess opening ever or the best
If I face someone who plays it I would laugh in their face and tell them to resign
Surprisingly, there is an entire cult dedicated to playing the Grob. But why? Why would they spend their time on such a useless opening? Is the Grob not as bad as it seems?-maple
Well, there are some benefits to playing the Grob, such as this tricky line:
(insert chess board here with tricky line that gambits two pawns for a rook)
Grob gambit accepted, Hurst attack
Now I know what you are thinking. oH mY gOd MaPlE yOu JuSt MaDe A bLoG aBoUt WhY oPeNiNg TrApS sUcK yeah well this is technically an opening trap, but even if you don't want to try the trap part of this opening, then you could always go back to fighting for space on the flank and castle opposite sides to your opponent then attack using your space. However, your opponent can choose to not castle at all, and instead play in the center to try and get to your king, but if you castle you should have a formidable defensive fortress to survive. Of course stockfish will always say “this opening sucks bruh this position is clearly -69 for black oh my god why are you playing this opening” but if I’m being honest nobody really cares about what stockfish says, especially if you are a beginner since at any moment you or your opponent could hang every piece they have.
Final Verdict
So after all that, what do we think of the Grob? The opening has its upsides and downsides, so what do we think that sums up to? Is it really that trash, or is it better than everyone thinks?
Maple:
If I’m being honest, the Grob just is not an opening that should be taught to players of any level. It’s kinda dog and breaks all opening principles, and according to chess.com “can be refuted with solid play”. It is very easy to fight against the Grob, but the queenside can be attacked very early on. I rate this opening 4/10, do better next time.
joaquingarza2011:
Honestly it’s a mid opening considering that all you can do is throw off opponents and make them play worse. That's my take on it. 6/10 for the unexpected bong cloud iq of the move.
