From Alekhine to Erigaisi

From Alekhine to Erigaisi

Hi, chess lovers...I don't have much time these days, but wanted to share again a "chess coincidence".

Recently, in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, Arjun Erigaisi played the Blumenfeld Gambit!

Now, White can accept the pawn......

But that gives Black the centre.....so Mendonca chose another move, Bg5......

And on move 8 Erigaisi chose a "risky" move, ....g5!

And as you can see in the video (with Commentary by IM Sagar Shah) and the moves, the game ended in a draw.

You can imagine my surprise when, perusing Tartakower's book....

....I found a game between A. Rubinstein and Tartakower, from 1922, in which Tartakower plays this Blumenfeld Gambit, and wins! And not only that, he analyses the Bg5 move that Mendonca plays. In Tartakower's line, Black plays ....d6 instead of ...g5, and equalizes. Although Erigaisi's ....g5 was "inferior", he still developed his pieces as actively as possible, and a draw was reached after a threefold-repetition.

Best wishes to everyone for the New Year.
