Take up the ancestral game with a modernized four player version.
Rules:
✅ Develop pieces and keep your structure solid as you build your bridge to the high-top hill.
✅ Pawns promote to a rook on the 10th rank; pawns can also move one square sideways.
✅ Any player can checkmate another player by exhausting their 12 lives, or checkmate all the remaining players by reaching the four central squares with their royal.
Free For All (FFA)
The goal is to finish with the most points of any player.
Points may be earned in the following ways:
⚔️ Checkmating an opponent: +20 points
⚔️ Stalemating yourself +20
⚔️ Capturing active (colored)
pieces: pawns +1, knights +3, bishops +5, rooks +5, queens +9, kings +20,
⚔️ Checking two players simultaneously: +1
⚔️ Checking three players simultaneously: +5
⚔️ Pawns will promote on your 10th rank.
🛡️ Pieces become “dead” (grey) when a player is eliminated. Capturing dead pieces does not award any points.
🛡️ Gameplay begins with the Red player. Clockwise move order: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green.
🛡️ The game is finished when three players have been eliminated.
🛡️ When a player resigns or times out, their army will become “dead” but their King remains "live" and will continue to move at random until checkmated or stalemated.
🛡️ Points for stalemated resigned kings are shared.
🏹 The last remaining player will be given +20 for each enemy king left on the board.
🏹 Claim Win means a player is so far ahead on points that he will win even if he resigns.
🏹 Autoclaim means a player is forced to claim the win (eg resign) immediately to protect the player in 2nd place.
🏹 In case of insufficient material, threefold repetition or the 50-move rule, the remaining players will share the points of the remaining kings.
🏹 Points do not directly affect rating changes, only final placement does.
🏹 A disconnected player has 60 seconds to reconnect before being forfeit on time.
IMPORTANT: Players must think independently. It is prohibited to suggest moves and/or coordinate attacks using chat (or other means of communication) during FFA 4PC games! Also players may not discuss blunders which can be fixed, but may discuss what already happened and cannot be undone. If you break this rule you will be chat-banned or even play-banned! Examples of prohibited phrases: "Check red", "Let's attack green together", "I won't take your queen", "Mind your rook", "Protect your pawn", "Mate in 2". You can use these and similar phrases in chat after a game, but not during a game.
IMPORTANT: It is prohibited to ask other players to give you points! For example: "Give me 7 points and I will resign.", "Just 5 points, ple-e-ease!" You can be chat-banned for doing this.

Chaturdrez:
"Chatur" means 4 in Sanskrit, in short it is related to 4 armies of 4 different colors, the reference was also used to relate it to the composition of the members of the army, infantry, cavalry, generals, royalty. "Drez" comes from the word chess in Latin, therefore we have merged these two words in "Chaturdrez". This sport integrates the concepts of current chess rules for 4 players with ancestral and modern pieces.
The Chosen Pieces
All these chosen pieces have a reason to be present, which is mainly their historical value, that is the essence of this game. Here we are implementing modern pieces with ancestral pieces.
Elephant:
This piece is historical, the first time it was seen on a chessboard, it is the oldest game on record called Chaturaji for 4 players and later it is seen in a version for 2 players called Chaturanga, or vice versa (that is still under discussion); the important thing here now is to know the strengths of this piece.
Here again it involves the player's ability to gain advantage and efficiency in battle.
It is not a strong piece on the board, easy to use, but you must create efficient movements to give this piece more fluidity. Its best performance is taking care of key squares of the king, although if you manage to centralize this piece on the board as an attack function, it can do a lot of damage. It usually destroys stone walls created by the opponent's pawn structures.
Knight Xiangki
This piece is for highly skilled players with good concentration, since they will have to create more efficient tactical routes during the game, this piece also acts as an external guardian of the pawns, and knows how to defend key squares against their rivals; which makes it highly interesting in the development of a strategic plan.
This is one ancestral pieces together with the elephant and the sailboat, the movements of this piece are limited, therefore it requires greater calculation and concentration from the player, since the difficulty is that this piece cannot jump over others pieces in its path, in other words, the knight does not jump like the knight does in western chess and can be blocked by a piece of any color located at an adjacent point horizontally or vertically. This piece belongs to the Chinese culture where Xiangki was played, I have an image to better represent it below:
1.- The red Knight may capture the black Knight, but the black horse cannot capture the red horse because its movement is obstructed by another piece.
2.- Green moves are legal; red ones are illegal because another piece is obstructing the movement of the Knight.
Pawn "Sideways":
On this occasion I have also incorporated the Lateral Pawns, they are pawns that have great skill, in their race to achieve promotion, which as we said before, will not be an easy task, since we have increased the promotion distance to 10th place. Obtaining that precious Sailboat will be quite an odyssey, but it will be well rewarded, as it could give you the possibility of obtaining a victory in the final stage of the game. The sideways Pawn can move horizontally and can also go back horizontally, it can only go forward and never go back. They also help improve the defense structure of the king, in case it has been damaged.
Camel:
This piece is incredibly interesting and great to use, it's an ancestral piece with a novel move type and very efficient to traverse a wide 12x12 board. This piece feels very good in this wide environment, I personally associate it a lot with the culture of Egypt and the desert. However, the following story is known:
This piece has a movement very similar to that of the modern Knight.
Tamerlane's chess is a chess-related board game that comes from shatranj. It developed in the Persian Empire during the reign of Tamerlane (1336-1405). Some sources attribute the invention of the game to Tamerlane himself, but this is unlikely. As Tamerlane chess is a larger variant of shatranj, it is also called Shatranj Kamil (perfect chess) or Shatranj Al-Kabir (big chess).
It moves in an "L" shape, like an orthodox chess knight, with dimensions of 3 × 1 instead of 2 × 1.
This piece is initially located in a strategic place, being the first defender of the king's weak pawn and at the same time it can also be developed to excellent squares to prepare a dynamic and devastating attack.
We can describe this piece, with great skill, it is not the most powerful in this battle, but if it is very strong and can surprise you at any time, you must be very attentive. You can get very quickly to any sector of the board. Its aesthetics are excellent, this piece is very well designed.
Rook Sailboat:
Its design is unique and very attractive. This piece belongs to the Chaturaji game, which is the first 4-player chess concept in the world. I have chosen this design to keep the ancestral figure rather than a modern rook. When promoting, you can also choose a new sailboat to increase your fleet. Probably can be promoted in the "end stage" of the game, in the 3 player stage normally, it will be difficult to promote in the "middle game", not an easy task, but the soldier pawns have very good ability in this version, everything It will depend on what happens in the course of the battle.
Gameplay:
In Chaturdrez there is a symmetrical distribution of pieces, it provides positional security from the beginning, the game has a very good overall balance. I also dare to say that the famous "TEAM Players" does not exist either, or you can call it "Strategic Alliance", since the composition of the board and the position of the pieces is different compared to 4 player Chess, also highlight that the queens are positioned defensively in direct protection of the king, so the strategy is totally different and dynamic at the same time, since it proposes various types of opening.
In Chaturdrez there are multiple ways to play and establish a battle plan, in the more than 100 completed games I have checked with real people, the different game ideas that I have wanted to carry out, and of course always taking care of the protection of my king by keeping him sure. The main objective of an exquisite playability and balance for all colors is achieved from the beginning, which is a very important factor for me, since the green color moves from the last ones, as clockwise would, normally has disadvantage in other variants and that does not happen here, that is a great achievement in this type of variant.
User Experience:
The game has received very good constructive criticism and has also received good acceptance from the players. They have expressed words like interesting, entertaining, dynamic, fun, well designed, attractive, balanced, some have said that they liked playing, there are other people who have asked me for a second or third game as revenge. I've also received criticism like the one mentioned above, some don't like or understand Knight Xiangki, but then they get used to it during the game, and I don't blame them, I also had a hard time learning those moves at first. Other people would like to see other types of pieces on the board, which can actually be an option, but I didn't include them as they are pieces that do double duty or are gothic pieces, which I think is far from the essence of this game. However, I could consider them for another type of project focused on that line. To date there are already more than 100 games completed with only humans and no bots.
Variant Players:
For all of us who are regular players of variations, we are here for many reasons, but I would like to highlight one of the most relevant, which is that we like the novelty of some pieces that are not in modern chess, we like to live the experience to perform new movements such as in the case of the elephant, the knight xiangki, the camel, the pawn soldier, all these pieces are interesting to use.
Chaturdrez Experience:
Chaturdrez works perfectly as an additional alternative, to live the experience of exploring new movements of pieces and diverse plans of strategies before and during the game in its structure. The completed games adhere to the same traditional amount of time as any other game, no game has been forever ("Eternal games") and no game has ended by the 50-move rule so far. This game makes you want to play another game, try again and do better. There are various tactical resources similar to those experienced in Four Player Chess, certain replicas of some winning positions can be made and that is really great since they are patterns that regular players already have embedded in our subconscious and we apply them in each game.
To conclude, I can say that I have spent months developing this idea, and I have finally been able to give life to this variant, I also want to thank you for the opportunity that there is a platform that allows you to do this and make your dreams and desires come true. There are now a large number of new and interesting variants and I have taken the time to get to know several different games and all with their novel qualities.
