Attacking Properly Vol. 1
Attacking is one of the most important skills for any chess player. Whether you have just started playing chess or you already are a titled player, you simply need to know how to attack and thus, deliver checkmate.
Throughout my coaching career I have taught a number of players how to attack properly, i.e. according to a certain methodology which anyone can understand (see summary at the end of the post). The game you are about to see is a model example of attacking the king in the center. I have seen this game so many times that I could probably recreate it out of my memory when being waken up at 3.a.m. (as long as I'm not writing this post at that time ).
However, it was only a few days ago when I realized that the hero of this game, i.e. GM Boris Spassky-the 10th world champion was only 11 years old when he created the below masterpiece! To cut the long story short, take a look at what the future master of initiative did to his opponent.
Take a look at my brief annotations, too.
- When the enemy's king is in the center: open files and diagonals (preferably central ones).
- Engage as many of your pieces as possible (i.e. it is not enough to attack with a queen and a bishop).
- Create threats so that the opponent is under pressure all the time.
- Look for available tactial resources when all of your pieces are actively used in the attack.
