Attacking Properly Vol. 2
Unquestionably, a successful attack on the king requires proper calculation and often depends on the the player's ability to find tactical resources in given positions. However, I believe that attacking the king is an element of strategy. After all, there are some general rules to be obeyed (some do's and dont's). In my opinion, in order to become a dangerous attacking player, one should master the strategic pattern recognition.
It's simply so much easier to find the correct move in a particular position when you get an impression of: "hey, I've seen this sort of an idea before". Does that even happen? Do you recall the model attack that was depicted in Spassky-Avtonomov, where the Master of Initiative broke through the opponent's position using the d4-d5 break? I think the below example may look familiar.
Since the aforementioned game was played much earlier than the below masterpiece created by GM Alexander Alekhine, we could assume that the young Boris Spassky (not yet a GM) was inspired by his great predecessor. Say what you want, but strategic pattern recognition exists. Here's the proof.
Below please find my brief annotations to this game.
Conclusions:
- Your opponent's unnecessary moves in the opening (i.e. other than involving fighting for the center, developing the pieces or castling) might be a sign of an attacking opportunity.
- Look for a way to break through in the center if your opponent gets to aggressive instead of accomplishing the development.
- Make sure to seize the initiative and grow it with constant threats - this will enable you to put pressure on your opponent.
- Don't allow your opponent to consolidate when you're attacking (i.e. prevent him from castling and/or connecting the rooks as well as bringing the minor pieces to central positions).
- Calculate on each and every move - this way you will not miss a way to win material / give checkmate or allow counterplay.
- Don't take hostages - winning the queen does not win the game (only checkmate does).
