Hey guys! If you like Fianchettos and also Queen’s Gambit, I have the perfect line for you: Catalan Opening. In this variation, White uses a mix to create a very interesting opening. In this post, we are going to study the basics about how to play this strong and famous system.

Highlights about Catalan Opening

  • Against Catalan Opening, Black can play two main systems: Closed Catalan when they don’t take on c4 and just focus on their development and Open Catalan when they take the pawn on c4 at some point in the opening.
  • At the same time, in Open Catalan, Black can play two different approaches: when Black defends the extra pawn on c4 (whatever it takes) and when Black doesn’t defend it (I take it, but you take it back), but still, White needs to lose some tempos to get that pawn back.
  • Moves like Ne5, Qc2, and Rd1 are typical for White in many variations of Catalan Opening. The Catalan Bishop is an essential piece in this System.

In this post/video there are plans, general ideas, and some theory. But keep in mind that practice, experience, and learning from your mistakes is what is really going to help you to completely understand a new Opening in your repertoire. Hope this helps!

Good luck to everybody, and take care!!!

Stay home as much as possible.
