The Halloween Gambit: How to play it, and 3 reasons why you should add it to your openings
Do you want to scare away your chess friends? Make them never want to play chess again after you DEMOLISH them with a killer gambit?
Time for you to play the Halloween Gambit
Today I will show you how to play the main lines, and 3 reasons why you SHOULD
First, the basic lines:
That is the gambit
And here is Halloween Gambit excepted:
Now before you run away, let me show you the best way for white to continue. They just gave up a knight for a pawn so it has to be worth it
So lets look at each of those options:
The Knight is forced back:
They can't push the pawn or else the knight will be taken and white will be winning. so they have to BLOCK the pin
If they take with the queen, the Knight will die with the pawn push. So they have to take with the pawn
Ahh ha! The queen attack and the fork attack. The Queen must retreat
The Knight is gone and after you take it, your in a winning
Your down a few pawns, but you have 3 pieces developed, they have only pawns out
lets look at the other pawn you can push: this is a lot simpler, and leads to similar positions.
So give it a try!
Ahhhh. One more thing. You can play this gambit against one other move. If they don't play the four knights game and instead push their bishop, you still have lines:
A fork.
