Appel (Scratch)
What is Appel?
Appel is a hit project on the MIT run site scratch.mit.edu. It's a 2-D platformer where you jump around and try to get to the finish flag, avoiding spikes and enemys. Here are the rules:
- ★★★ CONTROLS ★★★
- • Arrow Keys or WASD to run, jump & crouch
- • Wall Jump - by touching a wall and pressing 'up'
- • Jump Higher - by holding up for longer
- • Stick to the ceiling - by holding up - But be careful, you can't move sideways when 'stuck' to a surface
- • Crouch by holding down (you can crouch on the floor, but also the walls and ceiling!)
- • Q + R - to quickly restart the level
- • Complete a level, then click 'replay' and then pause for an option to save your replay (load them back in the Play / Load option)
Try playing it at https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/60917032.
Appel has been a hit since it first came out. All griffpatch projects are a hit, though. So what makes Appel so special? I think it's the community.
Appel Mods
Appel has an in-game level editor, and a forum to post them on. But what I really think of when I think of the community is the projects. They are just SO much more comfterble to play. Here's a studio with some! scratch.mit.edu/studios/34553373.
There are all kinds of Appel Mods. Some are easy, some are hard, and some even need spike and litejumps to get through! One of the most popular is Absurd Appel. The first three levels are easy, but I can't even get through the 4th!
Appel Speedrunning
Appel speedrunning is also very big. Multiple Appel projects have a speedrun.com page, including Absurd Appel and the original. People have made multiple categories including All Checkpoints, Low Checkpoints, Minimum Appels, and more! It's fun, and you might even get a record. Specifically griffpatches original levels are very streamlined and so fun to play. However, every new level is fun! Get started with this project!
