Playing a chess hustler in Chicago!

Hey y'all I'm going to share a cool story that happened yesterday!

So for about a month now my Dad was planning our trip to Chicago and during his planning he found out that there was a chess pavilion at the end of Lincoln park. So after seeing this we did some research and it looked like we would be able to see it during our trip there! We watch some videos on it and it looked nice, with great views of the city and some players. The plan was we would take an uber right to the pavilion to start our walk. So after being in the car for a few hours we arrived, and my plan was to act like a beginner and hopefully surprise the hustler (Not that I'm a great play but, I can certainly put up a bit of a fight against strong players most of the time wink.png). When we walked up to the pavilion we saw 1 guy there. He was sitting at his board and just listening to his music. We asked if he'd be up to play a game for $5 and he said sure. Sadly I don't have the game to show you but, I'll try my best to give synopsis of how game 1 went. I had white, the Time control was 5|0 and before the game I muttered "I'm a bit rusty as I haven't play for a while" (trying my best to act like a beginner xD). The game started with 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 e6!? It's a bit of a weird move but perfectly playable, I've seen it a few times online. Usually Bf5 and c5 are the most common moves though. The game continued with him having a fianchetto on the kingside and gaining some space on the queenside and I gained space on the Kingside, I also played c4 earlier in the game. It was pretty normal until I attacked his Knight on b5 with a4 and he just left it there? His idea was that he might be able to get 2 connected passed pawns on the queenside but, it didn't really work and I was just up a clean Knight. In the end though I ended up blundering and gave him 2 connected passed pawns that won him the game. Once I resigned he said "This kids a GM" (jokingly but, he was actually very impressed by my play xD). We chatted for a bit and I found out that he was 2100 online and was a really cool guy in general. He'd been playing since he was 8 and said I was a good player which felt good as he's a pretty strong player. Then as we were just about to head out he asked if I could play 1 more game for fun, and of course I said "yes"! I had black in game 2 and it was an advance French but, with a bit of a twist, it went 1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.f4? not a bad move just not very common. I continued by playing Qb6 and Nh6, Nf5. after my knight was on f5 he played g4 to kick it so I played Ne7. He also ended up playing a3 so I played c4 (as out paws hadn't been exchanged) and Na5 to gain strong control of the Queenside and castled that way to. I ended up play f6 and h5 to open up his kingside (where he castled) and the game ended with his Rook on f2, his knight on g2 and my Knight on g3 with my rook on h1 leaving me with a nice mate! I was pretty happy with the win as it felt pretty clean (engine would probably disagree lol) and it was against a 2100 so that's also a big bonus! At the end the guy was super nice and as we left he told my parents "Keep this kids chess going"! You should have seen the smile on my face after that xD. My only regret was not getting the guys name or online info as it would be fun to also play him here but, nothing I can do about it. Also as a bonus my Dad took a pic of the game so here's that! Thanks for reading and have a great day happy.png

This is my place where I talk about chess. Whether it be OTB tournaments, instructional content, etc it’ll be all about chess happy.png. I hope you enjoy!
