Are all rook endgames really a draw?

Not really. There are plenty of rook endgame position studies such as the Lucena Position, Philidor Position, Vancura Defence and 7th rank defence. Out of these, the philidor is a draw, the lucena is a win but not at all times and the last 2 I mentioned have no specific study and are difficult to play. But I know every inch of playing those positions. So, today we will learn about them. The first game I will show you is a daily game, and the second is a live 10 min game. There will also be additional lessons. Here are the games:-

I am black in this one.

I am white in this game.

                                                     Lessons altogether:-

1. All the positions I mentioned consist either white or black with a pawn up. When black/white gangs down on the extra pawn, he must make sure to keep a file gap between his king and rook, even if there will be 1 square gap if he brings his king in the file of rook.

                                                         Lessons from 1st game:-

1. It is always good to keep your rook on the pawn's promotion square to take preparations for skewer.

                                                  Lessons from 2nd game:-

1. On move 33, I allowed my opponent to do en passant on c3 because it is easy to track it down vertically. Whereas if I did a4, after doing en passant, my opponent would do a4 and I would have to capture the a4 pawn. Then the rook would capture it and provide support to a3 pawn which then would be much more difficult to track down vertically than the c3 pawn.

Hope my lessons were instructive. Feel free to pm me in case of any doubt!happy.png
